Speedway Star Tobias Thomsen Suffers Severe Injuries in Crash
Speedway rider Tobias Thomsen has been left with serious injuries following a shocking crash on Friday evening. The 31-year-old Danish athlete is currently recovering in the hospital after sustaining multiple fractures and internal injuries.
Thomsen was involved in an accident during a heat-one race between his former team, Poole Pirates, and his current side, Plymouth Gladiators. He was hit from behind by Richard Lawson, resulting in a series of severe injuries. According to reports, he suffered a broken femur, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a small brain haemorrhage.

In a recent update posted on Facebook, Thomsen shared details about his condition. He mentioned that his femur had been stabilised with a titanium bar inserted from the knee up to the hip. Additionally, he revealed that he had three minor fractures around his eye, which did not require surgery. However, he also sustained three broken ribs and a punctured lung.
Thomsen added that he had a small brain haemorrhage, but doctors have assured him it is not serious. He expressed uncertainty about what the future holds but remains determined to recover and return to racing.
“I want to race again because it’s what makes me happy and feel alive,” he said. “I really thought I had everything under control at this time. But getting hit from behind is hard to avoid. This is a race accident, and I have no grudge against Lawson — I know this could happen.”
Focus on Recovery and Support
The Plymouth Gladiators team released an official statement expressing their concern for Thomsen’s well-being. They highlighted that the immediate focus is on his recovery, although the full timeline for his return remains unclear. The team also praised Thomsen’s determination to regain his fitness and assess his future in the sport.
“Racing is something he loves and is a huge part of his life, and his aim is to return when he is ready,” the statement read. “Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who donated last night. An incredible £1,387.95 was collected in the buckets, and your support is hugely appreciated.”
The team also thanked fans for their messages of support, stating that they mean a great deal to Thomsen.
Reaction from Team-Mate
Thomsen’s former team-mate, Richard Lawson, expressed his shock and disappointment over the incident. He shared his feelings on social media, saying: “Jesus Christ mate! I am absolutely gutted for you, wish I wasn’t the other rider in this with you. So s, and we were just chatting 5 minutes beforehand! Hopefully see you in Denmark. I really hope you heal quicker than anticipated. F mate.”
Looking Ahead
As Thomsen begins his recovery journey, the racing community continues to show its support. Fans and fellow riders are hoping for a swift and successful rehabilitation so that he can return to the track.
With his determination and the backing of his team and supporters, there is optimism that Thomsen will make a full recovery and potentially return to racing in the near future.
