Spencer Matthews Opens Up About His Drinking and Relationship with Vogue Williams
Spencer Matthews, known for his role on Made in Chelsea, has shared some candid reflections on his past struggles with alcohol and how it affected his marriage to TV presenter Vogue Williams. The couple, who met in 2017 while competing on The Jump, have since welcomed three children together—Theodore, Gigi, and Otto. However, their relationship was not without its challenges, particularly when it came to Spencer’s drinking habits.
Spencer admitted that if his drinking had worsened, Vogue might have left him. He spoke about the strain his lifestyle placed on their relationship over the years, which nearly led to its breakdown. He described a growing divide in their relationship when he continued drinking during Vogue’s pregnancy with their first child, Theodore.
A Growing Divide
On the On the Mend with Matt Willis podcast, Spencer revealed that he was aware of the potential consequences of his actions. “I was very aware that if I carried on with my drinking and bad habits, that she would get bored, and she would leave me,” he said. He noted that Vogue never directly confronted him with an ultimatum, but he could feel her disappointment.
He explained that the issue became more apparent when Vogue became pregnant with their first child. “The light was shone on my boozing when she fell pregnant with our firstborn, Theodore. He made a big difference to our relationship because what felt like joint fun became solo fun quite quickly because she stopped drinking completely.”
Spencer continued to drink, creating a rift between them. “I just didn’t, I carried on, and it created this kind of divide in the relationship, but also made me realise, you know, maybe my drinking habits are not normal.”
Confrontations and Realisations
Vogue eventually noticed how often he was drinking alone. She questioned him, leading to some tense conversations. “To begin with, I would say, like, ‘Darling, we’re watching a film, like, of course it’s, like, normal to have a few glasses of red wine.’” He recalled. “We’re at home chilling. And she’s like, ‘You’re drinking on your own.’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah, because you’re pregnant?’ And she’d be like, ‘Well, because I’m not drinking, do you have to, do you have to drink?’ And we’d have the odd chat like that.”
These exchanges made him question his habits. “And you kind of eventually, you just begin to think, why am I drinking on my own? And you begin to question stuff, perhaps for the first time.”
Addressing His Drinking Habits
Spencer now claims he doesn’t consider himself an alcoholic, as he can drink in moderation. However, he admitted that in the past, “having one glass would have turned into ten and then I’d be out all night.” He described his current relationship with alcohol as much healthier. “I’m sober most of the time, now. I’ve gone from problem-drinking on a daily basis to having a drink if I feel like it very irregularly. I no longer see it as a problem. I have great balance in my life.”
His drinking habits were exacerbated by his previous job as a trader. “I always had jobs where being able to handle your drink really well was a huge bonus,” he said. He recounted working at ICAP, where “we would drink five to 10 pints every single day and then take clients out at night. If you couldn’t do that, you wouldn’t get the job, basically.”
A Moment of Clarity
After a night of heavy drinking alone, Spencer had a moment of clarity. “It’s not like I just fancied giving up drinking. I could have lost you, I could have lost work, I could have died – not to be overly dramatic about it, but that’s the way it was heading.”
A Public Reassurance
Last year, Vogue addressed rumors of their separation on Instagram. “It’s with great sadness that I have to let you know that Spen and I are NOT breaking up!” she posted. She expressed frustration with the persistent false narratives and emphasized that they are still very much in love. “We’re very happily married and in love and I hope posting the truth on my own platform might make it stop.”
