C-3PO’s Golden Head Fetches Over a Million Dollars at Auction
A gleaming C-3PO head, a pivotal prop from the beloved Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, has officially joined the exclusive million-dollar collectors’ club. The iconic piece of cinematic history commanded an astonishing price of over $1 million (approximately €980,000) at a recent auction, solidifying its status as a highly sought-after artefact.
The esteemed prop went under the hammer earlier this week as part of the Spring Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, hosted by Propstore in Los Angeles. What makes this particular item even more remarkable is its rarity; it is recognised as the only known screen-used example of the golden protocol droid’s head to ever enter the collector market. Initially, the item was estimated to fetch between $350,000 and $700,000 (around €323,000 to €646,000). However, bidding far exceeded expectations, culminating in a final sale price of an impressive $1,058,400.

A Treasure Trove of Cinematic Memorabilia
The auction wasn’t solely focused on droids and distant galaxies. A diverse array of film relics attracted keen interest from cinephiles and dedicated collectors alike. Among the notable items was the harpoon gun, famously wielded by Robert Shaw’s grizzled shark hunter Quint in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 summer blockbuster, Jaws. This significant prop, complete with its original case, successfully reeled in a bid of $327,600 (approximately €303,000).
Further adding to the Jaws collection was the Fenwick fishing rod and reel that Quint used during his intense and terrifying showdown with the great white shark. This screen-used prop also commanded a jaw-dropping sum, selling for $239,400 (around €221,000).
Unexpected Stars and Fantasy Favourites
Beyond the realm of aquatic thrillers, other iconic movie items also found new homes. Wilson, the inanimate volleyball that served as Tom Hanks’ sole companion in the survival drama Cast Away, significantly exceeded its pre-sale estimates. The beloved prop sold for $189,000 (approximately €175,000), surpassing the initial prediction of $150,000-$300,000 (around €139,000-€278,000).
Fantasy enthusiasts had their own treasures to vie for. Fragments of a sword from the epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy fetched a substantial $252,000 (around €233,000). Meanwhile, the intricate Marauder’s Map from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban garnered a winning bid of $59,850 (approximately €55,000). Adding a touch of whimsical magic, a golden ticket from Gene Wilder’s original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory also sold for $107,100 (around €99,000).

Star Wars Memorabilia Continues to Break Records
While the C-3PO head certainly captured significant attention at this year’s auction, the Star Wars franchise has a history of producing memorabilia that achieves astronomical figures. Last year, a lightsaber used by Darth Vader across the original Star Wars trilogy – specifically in A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983) – sold for a record-breaking $3.6 million (approximately €3 million).
The winning bid for this iconic red lightsaber, which amounted to $2.9 million plus a $700,000 buyer’s premium paid to the auction house, made it the highest-valued product ever to be offered from the hit movie franchise at another Propstore auction. This legendary weapon surpassed a plastic Boba Fett action figure, also from Star Wars, which had previously achieved a remarkable $1.342 million (approximately €1.144 million) in 2024. The final day of bidding for the current auction was scheduled to conclude on 27 March.
