Key Players Out for Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs are facing a significant challenge as they prepare for their upcoming clash with Hawthorn. Star midfielder Ed Richards, ruckman Tim English, and young forward Arty Jones will be missing from the team, both in this game and beyond. This absence is a major blow to the Bulldogs, who have been performing exceptionally well this season.

Injuries Impact Team Performance
During the recent match against Essendon, the Bulldogs managed a comfortable 34-point victory, but the win came at a cost. Richards withdrew just before the game due to discomfort in his left knee. Scans later revealed an issue with a tendon behind his knee. Meanwhile, English suffered an MCL injury during the third quarter, and Jones sustained a low-grade hamstring strain.
The team’s coach, Luke Beveridge, expressed concern over the injuries. He mentioned that Richards is coming off his first All-Australian berth last year, where he averaged 26 disposals and 5.7 clearances. English’s absence will be felt against Hawthorn’s strong ruck combination of Lloyd Meek and Ned Reeves.

Challenges for Young Talent
Arty Jones, known for his energetic play, had kicked three goals and taken two hangers before his injury. He will miss two to four weeks, which is a setback for the young forward. Jones has only played five games across 2024 and 2025, highlighting the challenges he faces in maintaining consistency.
Beveridge commented on Jones’ situation, noting that he has shown promise but often gets injured when he starts to perform well. The coach plans to work on improving Jones’ durability to ensure he can stay on the field longer.

Realistic Expectations for the Season
Despite the Bulldogs’ current unbeaten record after four games, Beveridge emphasized the need for caution. The team dropped out of the finals last year and hasn’t won in September since the 2021 preliminary final. Beveridge pointed out that the team lacks the necessary consistency to dream of a deep run in the season.
“We’ve just got no runs on the board,” Beveridge said. “So, I mean, yeah, promising start, but we haven’t sustained anything like this any other year.”
Struggles Under Pressure
The Bulldogs showed strong performance in the first quarter against Essendon, but their performance dipped afterward. Beveridge acknowledged that the team struggled under pressure, fumbling the ball and missing open-field targets. He noted that the conditions were ideal, yet the team failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
This setback serves as a reminder that the Bulldogs still have a long way to go to establish themselves as a consistent contender in the AFL. With key players sidelined, the team must find ways to adapt and maintain their momentum as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
