Striker opts for Sydney FC over Scotland

Sydney FC Bolsters Attack with Loan Signing of Apostolos Stamatelopoulos

Sydney FC has made a significant move in the transfer window by securing the services of Apostolos Stamatelopoulos on a loan deal from Scottish Premiership club Motherwell. The 26-year-old striker, who previously played for Newcastle Jets, Western United, and Adelaide United, is set to join the Sky Blues until the end of the A-League season.

This signing comes as a strategic decision for both clubs. Sydney FC is looking to strengthen its attacking options and boost its goal-scoring potential, while Stamatelopoulos sees this move as an opportunity to increase his visibility and performance level, which could enhance his chances of being selected for the Socceroos squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

“I’m extremely excited to join Sydney FC — the biggest club in the A-League with a winning culture and high expectations,” Stamatelopoulos said. “After my time overseas, this is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I’m ready to embrace. There is still over a third of the season to play and I’ve come here to challenge for places, contribute goals and help the team push for the A-League title.”

Stamatelopoulos has not yet had the chance to play under Socceroos coach Tony Popovic, but he did make a single national team appearance in June 2024 when Graham Arnold led Australia to a 5-0 victory over Palestine.

The striker’s journey to Motherwell began a month after his impressive 2023-24 A-League campaign with the Jets, where he scored 17 goals. He signed a three-year deal with the Scottish club and has since made 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring 12 goals, including a brace against Celtic at Parkhead in a 3-2 loss to the Hoops in October.

It is expected that Stamatelopoulos will arrive in Sydney on Wednesday and will be available for selection when the third-placed Sky Blues host Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay expressed his excitement about the new addition, highlighting the impact Stamatelopoulos will have on the team’s attacking strategy.

“He’s a strong centre-forward with an excellent work rate, intelligent movement in the box and a proven ability to score goals in the A-League and overseas,” Talay said. “His experience will be very valuable for us as we continue pushing towards the business end of the season. His arrival lifts the level of our entire front line.”
