Lance Collard Faces Uncertain Future as Homophobic Slur Case Proceeds
St Kilda’s Lance Collard is currently in a “holding pattern” as he awaits the outcome of a new disciplinary hearing related to a homophobic slur. The incident has cast a shadow over his AFL career, with the potential for significant consequences.
Collard was found guilty of using a derogatory term against a VFL opponent, which has now led to another tribunal being scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The Saints have already indicated they may consider an appeal, adding further uncertainty to the situation.

After St Kilda’s 12.9 (81) to 9.13 (67) victory over Port Adelaide on Sunday night, coach Ross Lyon commented on Collard’s status, stating, “I haven’t had a conversation. He’s in a holding pattern.”
The 21-year-old player has denied using the slur during a VFL match last month. However, his history includes a six-match ban for the same type of offense in 2024. Collard attended a tribunal hearing last Thursday, and the deliberations extended into Friday before a decision was made public late that evening.
The AFL has reportedly pushed for a 10-week suspension rather than a 10-match one, but the case could continue to unfold. St Kilda is reviewing the tribunal’s findings and will consider all available options, including the possibility of an appeal.
In a statement released last Friday, the club expressed disappointment with the tribunal’s decision. “The club is also reviewing the tribunal’s written findings and will consider its position, including avenues of appeal. We will continue to support Lance throughout this process.”
Collard claims he said, “Come here, maggot,” to Frankston player Darby Hipwell during the incident. However, Hipwell testified that Collard used the word “f*” while his head was close to his ear.
Collard, who has played 15 AFL games, is expected to face sanctions following the upcoming hearing. Meanwhile, Lyon and most of the St Kilda squad are in Adelaide, preparing for Saturday night’s match against the Crows at Adelaide Oval.
“We’ll stay for the week … that doesn’t come without challenge, but one we’ve embraced,” Lyon said. “We have ticked the first leg, so to speak.”
