Swift Shatters Records: 2025’s Bestselling Album

Taylor Swift’s latest musical offering, “The Life Of A Showgirl,” has officially been crowned the world’s best-selling album for 2025, as confirmed by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). This momentous achievement solidifies the 36-year-old artist’s continued reign at the pinnacle of the global music industry, adding another significant milestone to her already illustrious career.

Released in October of the previous year, Swift’s twelfth studio album swiftly ascended to the top of multiple IFPI charts. It not only claimed the overall best-selling album position but also dominated the charts for physical releases and paid downloads, and impressively, the vinyl sales chart. In a feat that has become a hallmark of her career, Swift shattered her own record for the highest number of physical records sold for the fourth consecutive year, a testament to her unwavering fan appeal and formidable commercial power.

The highly competitive general albums chart saw the American pop sensation outsell a diverse field of artists. Country music star Morgan Wallen’s album, “I’m The Problem,” secured a strong second place, while the soundtrack for the popular Netflix animated film “Kpop Demon Hunters” captured the third position.

Rounding out the top five were a collection of critically acclaimed and commercially successful releases. Bad Bunny’s “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos,” which garnered Album of the Year and Best Musica Urbana Album accolades at the 2026 Grammy Awards, landed at number four. Following closely was Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short ‘N’ Sweet,” a highly anticipated release from August 2024, which claimed the fifth spot.

A Global Phenomenon

Victoria Oakley, the chief executive of the IFPI, lauded Taylor Swift’s exceptional performance, stating, “Taylor Swift topping the IFPI global album rankings once again is a clear reflection of the strength of her connection with fans around the world. This year’s results also show how truly global today’s music market is, with success being driven across streaming and physical formats by artists from a wide range of countries and genres.”

The remaining slots in the top 10 albums chart showcased a rich tapestry of global talent and diverse genres:

  • Sixth: K-pop powerhouse Stray Kids with their album “Karma.”
  • Seventh: SZA’s highly successful album “SOS.”
  • Eighth: Billie Eilish’s latest critically acclaimed work, “Hit Me Hard And Soft.”
  • Ninth: Lady Gaga’s much-anticipated release, “Mayhem.”
  • Tenth: Japanese rock band Mrs Green Apple’s album “10.”

Beyond the album charts, the IFPI also recognised outstanding achievements in singles. Bruno Mars’s infectious track “APT,” a compelling collaboration with K-pop star Rosé, was officially named the best-selling single globally for 2025.

A Year of Milestones for Swift

Taylor Swift’s 2025 album release coincided with a period of significant personal and professional milestones. The album’s success followed her highly publicised engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce in August and her announcement in May that she had successfully regained full control of her extensive back catalogue.

Earlier in the year, Swift also captivated audiences with the music video for her single “Opalite.” The visually stunning video quickly climbed to the number one position on the UK singles chart and featured a star-studded ensemble of fellow “Graham Norton Show” guests. The cameo appearances included the esteemed presenter himself, alongside acclaimed actors Cillian Murphy and Domhnall Gleeson, and popular musician Lewis Capaldi, adding an extra layer of excitement and intrigue to the release.
