Tasmanian Search: Three Rescued, One Missing After Sea Incident

Ongoing Search for Missing Fisherman After Boat Capsizes Off Tasmania’s Coast

A desperate search is underway for a 33-year-old man who remains missing after his fishing boat capsized off Tasmania’s north-west coast on Saturday evening. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, September 16th, saw a group of four individuals thrown into the treacherous waters.

Tasmania Police confirmed that three survivors were successfully rescued on Sunday afternoon. These individuals, a 27-year-old woman, a 26-year-old man, and a six-year-old child, were found on the shores of nearby Robbins Island. Thankfully, all three were reportedly wearing life jackets and, despite spending a considerable amount of time in the water, did not sustain serious injuries. They were transported to North West Regional Hospital for medical assessment and treatment as a precautionary measure.

The fishing vessel had departed from the Montagu boat ramp around 5:30 pm on Saturday. Tragically, it capsized approximately three and a half hours later, around 9:00 pm. The alarm was raised on Sunday morning when concerned relatives contacted police shortly after 8:00 am, prompting the immediate launch of search and rescue operations.

The search for the missing 33-year-old man continued intensely throughout Sunday and into the late evening. Authorities have confirmed that the operation was scheduled to resume again on Monday morning, with all available resources being deployed.

Coordinated Rescue Efforts Underway

A significant multi-agency effort has been mobilised to locate the missing fisherman. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, a vital asset in such operations, has been actively involved in the aerial search. In addition, marine rescue vessels and numerous private boats, crewed by dedicated volunteers, have been scouring the waters and coastline. The proximity of Robbins Island to the suspected incident site has made it a key focus area for the search.

Safety Recommendations and Ongoing Investigation

Tasmania Police are expected to provide a further update on the search efforts during a press conference scheduled for 1:00 pm. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the critical importance of safety equipment, particularly life jackets, when venturing out on the water.

Investigators will be looking into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing of the fishing boat. Factors such as weather conditions, the vessel’s seaworthiness, and any potential mechanical issues will be thoroughly examined as the search for the missing individual continues. The focus remains on bringing the missing man home safely.
