Tavernier: Rangers Must Secure Three Points vs. Hearts

Rangers Face Crucial Showdown After Motherwell Stumble

Rangers captain James Tavernier has labelled Sunday’s clash against Premiership leaders Hearts at Ibrox a “must-win” encounter, following a disappointing draw against Motherwell that has widened the gap at the top of the table. The Gers had an opportunity to close the deficit to just three points against the Steelmen but ultimately fell short, leaving them in a precarious position with just 12 games remaining in the season.

A Frustrating Evening at Fir Park

The match against Motherwell started brightly for Rangers. Nico Raskin opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a well-executed team goal, giving the visitors an early advantage. However, Motherwell, under the guidance of Danny Rohl, demonstrated impressive resilience and control for large spells of the game.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the 78th minute when Motherwell’s Lukas Fadinger was shown a yellow card for a foul on Rangers attacker Mikey Moore. Following a review by referee Steven McLean on his pitchside monitor, the decision was upgraded to a red card, reducing the home side to 10 men.

Despite the numerical advantage, Rangers failed to capitalise. In the dying moments of normal time, Motherwell defender Stephen Welsh, on a second loan spell from Celtic, capitalised on a lapse in defensive concentration. Welsh managed to fire the ball past Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland from close range, securing a crucial point for his side and leaving Rangers five points adrift of Hearts. Adding to the concern, this result also sees them just one point ahead of Celtic, who have a game in hand.

Tavernier’s Call for Immediate Response

The captain acknowledged the gravity of the situation, emphasising the need for a victory against Hearts. “Every game’s a must-win,” Tavernier stated, “but with their lead in the table, obviously it’s a must-win if you want to compete for the title. So we have to get the three points, no matter what.”

He reflected on the team’s performance, admitting that while they have shown the ability to bounce back throughout the season, such slip-ups are no longer an option. “We obviously don’t want to put ourselves in these situations, and from now, with 12 games to go, we can’t really be having any of these situations going forward,” he explained. “So we’ve got to obviously show different ways of how to win and see games out when we’re not looking overly at our best.”

The Significance of the Hearts Fixture

The upcoming fixture against Hearts carries immense weight. “It’s obviously a massive game on the weekend,” Tavernier continued. “Every game’s massive, but it’s at home and we’ve got to really be on the front foot against another good team who’ve been doing well this season and get the three points.”

Tavernier also spoke about the development of the squad, highlighting their growth despite the challenges faced. “It’s a young squad. We’ve had ups and downs this season and then I felt that as young as the squad is, they’ve really came round and really grew as a group.”

He stressed the importance of these pivotal moments in the season, particularly as the title race intensifies. “These are pivotal moments in the season, where you come down to the last stretch and you’re really going for the title and you’re in the title race. So you can’t afford to have slip-ups like this, but we know it’s obviously a missed opportunity.”

The captain concluded with a resolute message: “We got a point and now we have to respond and get three points at home.” The focus now shifts to Sunday, where Rangers will aim to reignite their title aspirations with a crucial victory.
