A Love Story Forged in Teen Years: From Unexpected Pregnancy to 54 Years of Bliss
Christine Belsham, now 68, shares a remarkable love story that began with an unexpected twist of fate during her teenage years, leading to a lifelong partnership with her husband, Glen. What started with a high school dance invitation blossomed into a beautiful journey filled with family, adventure, and enduring love.
It all began in 1969 when a then 14-year-old Christine received a surprising invitation to the Taita Rugby Club social. Her best friend, Chris, delivered the news with a mischievous wink, revealing that Glen, a mate of the original dance date, had a car and Christine was his intended companion. The prospect of attending was daunting, especially with Christine’s strict parents.
“We’re not letting an 18-year-old boy drive our daughter to a dance,” Christine’s mother, Catherine, declared. However, Christine cleverly played her cards, mentioning that Glen’s sister was her teammate in the marching band. This connection to Glen’s family eased her parents’ concerns, and they eventually relented, with a strict curfew of “home by 10, not a minute later.”
The dance was a resounding success. Christine and Glen danced the night away, and she felt an immediate connection. Glen proved to be a true gentleman, not only dropping her home precisely on time but also politely requesting her phone number for a future call.
True to his word, Glen called the next day, and a sweet romance began to blossom. However, their budding relationship faced an unexpected challenge when Christine, at 16, discovered she was pregnant. She braced herself for Glen’s reaction, expecting him to walk away.
Instead, Glen, then 20, took her completely by surprise. “It’s our baby. We’ll get married and take care of it together,” he insisted, his unwavering support a beacon of hope. When Christine shared the news with her parents, she saw a mixture of fear and love in their eyes. Reassuring them of Glen’s commitment, “Glen wants to do the right thing,” she found solace in her mother’s hug and her father’s gentle assurance, “Don’t worry, love, it’ll be okay.”
Their wedding, just two months later, was a simple yet heartfelt ceremony at their local church, with Chris, the orchestrator of their meeting, in attendance. A cherished gift from Glen’s mother, a bed that became their first piece of furniture, symbolised the start of their new life together.
Their first year of marriage was spent living with Christine’s parents. Shortly before Christine turned 17, they welcomed their daughter, Natasha. Soon after, they moved into their own place, embarking on the busy journey of parenthood.

The desire to expand their family was strong, but conceiving a second child proved more challenging. After three years and the assistance of fertility drugs, they were overjoyed to welcome their son, Kurt. Four years later, another son, Regan, completed their family.
Life with three young children was wonderfully chaotic. Glen worked extra shifts as a truck driver, and Christine took on an early morning cleaning job before the children woke, all with the dream of owning their own home. Eight years of hard work and dedication finally allowed them to save enough for a deposit.
By this stage, Glen had established his own successful truck driving business, and Christine worked nights sorting mail for the post office. Despite their demanding schedules, they made it a priority to always share a hot meal together. Glen would often take on the evening chores, ensuring the house was tidy and the children were tucked into bed.

Christine recalls arriving home from her night shift to find the house immaculate, even the nappies soaking. Her mother, initially hesitant about Glen, now declared him “a one in a million!” and told Christine she was “the luckiest girl in the world.” Christine wholeheartedly agreed, cherishing Glen’s constant positivity and ability to make her smile.
As the children grew and established their own lives, an adventurous spirit took hold. When Glen sold his business in 1989, Christine, then 38, suggested they see the world. Having never travelled beyond New Zealand, their first trip to visit friends in Singapore, which included excursions to Hong Kong and China, ignited a passion for travel.
Their 25th wedding anniversary saw them embarking on a journey through the UK and Europe. This marked the beginning of a lifetime of adventures, exploring destinations such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Canada, Alaska, Slovenia, and Croatia, each experience enriching their lives immeasurably.

In 2007, Christine left her 15-year corporate career at Wellington Newspapers with a new ambition: to teach English in China. Glen was fully supportive, and 18 months later, at the age of 50, Christine stood before her first class. This fulfilling experience lasted a year and was a dream come true.
Their 50th wedding anniversary in 2022 was a momentous occasion, and Chris, the friend who had played such a pivotal role in their lives, was the guest of honour. Christine was thrilled that Chris could attend and even baked a special cake.

In the past decade, both Christine and Glen have faced significant health challenges, including battles with cancer. Following their recovery, they established a charity, Kiwi Kindness, to support those affected by the conflict in Ukraine, successfully collecting five tonnes of clothing for refugees. Christine was deeply touched when the local council presented her with an award for her humanitarian efforts, with the mayor commending her for “helping give so many people a purpose.”
Today, Christine and Glen have been together for 54 years and are proud grandparents to three. Their daughter Natasha, 52, has 25-year-old twins. Kurt is 48, and Regan, 44, has an eight-year-old son.

When asked about the secret to their lasting marriage, Christine’s answer is simple and heartfelt. It boils down to mutual care, sharing responsibilities, unwavering support through thick and thin, and seizing every opportunity to laugh together.
If she had the chance to choose again, Christine wouldn’t hesitate. “I’d choose Glen. No doubt about it.” Their enduring love story is a testament to resilience, commitment, and the beautiful life they’ve built together.
