Ben Te’o Breaks Silence After Resigning as Assistant Coach
Ben Te’o has finally spoken out following his resignation as assistant coach of the Brisbane Broncos. The former player, who was a key figure in the team’s recent success, has been relatively quiet since stepping down from his role last week.
According to reports, the departure came after a heated argument between Te’o and head coach Michael Maguire over tactical decisions ahead of a crucial match against the Melbourne Storm. This disagreement reportedly led to Te’o making the difficult decision to leave the club.
Te’o was also denied the chance to be part of Billy Slater’s Queensland Maroons coaching staff. The Broncos’ CEO, Dave Donaghy, explained that the club could not afford to weaken its program, adding that other assistants, such as Matt Ballin, were already involved with representative duties.
Although Te’o did not explicitly state the reason for his exit, he expressed satisfaction with his decision. Speaking on Triple M, he said:
“I’m going really well,” Te’o said. “It’s been a big week for me. Probably the first part of the week for me was the toughest and it is always unfortunate when things go this way. But all I can say is that I am someone who is pretty strong and I know what is important to me and where I am going in my coaching career and this was the decision that I came up with and I’m very comfortable with it.”
Maguire Avoids Details
Following the incident, Maguire was questioned about the situation during his post-match press conference against the Dolphins. However, he chose not to elaborate on the matter, sticking to a strict line of response.
“Look, he submitted his resignation and now we’ve taken that. And that’s all I’m going to talk about,” Maguire said. “I’m going to stick to my line here. I do apologise if you want more, but we’ve got a playing group in there. I’ve got a staff in there. We’ve got a really important game tomorrow night.”
New Opportunities on the Horizon
With the recent sacking of Anthony Seibold by the Manly Sea Eagles, Te’o may have an opportunity to step into a head coaching role in the NRL. He has also been linked with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Gold Coast Titans, with reports indicating that Josh Hannay is closely monitoring his current situation.
Te’o played a vital role in ending the Broncos’ 19-year premiership drought. His defensive coaching in last year’s Grand Final helped the team hold off the Melbourne Storm in the final moments, showcasing his expertise and dedication to the sport.
A New Chapter
As Te’o moves forward in his coaching career, it remains to be seen which path he will take. His experience, leadership, and deep understanding of the game make him a valuable asset to any team looking for a strong and strategic coach.
Whether he ends up at the Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, or another club, one thing is clear: Te’o is determined to continue making an impact in the world of rugby league.
