The 10 Thinker Types Revealed – Which One Are You?

Understanding the 10 Signature Thinking Styles

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where someone’s actions or opinions seemed completely baffling? According to Dr Marius Ostrowski, a political and social theorist and historian from Oxford, this can often be explained by the different ways people think. In his book How We Think, he explores 10 distinct types of thinking styles that shape how individuals perceive and interact with the world.

These thinking styles are not fixed traits but rather combinations influenced by upbringing, experiences, and situations. Everyone is likely a mixture of more than one type, making it rare for someone to fit into just one category. Let’s explore these 10 signature thinking styles:

Happy Camper

The Happy Camper is the person who remains optimistic even in difficult times. They are joy-filled, warm, and tend to move placidly through life. As Dr Ostrowski explains, “Some people just seem to see life from its sunniest side.” This type of thinker finds comfort in positivity and tends to approach challenges with hope and resilience.

Jokester

The Jokester is the life of the party, known for their ability to bring fun and laughter to any gathering. These individuals are gleeful, irreverent, and have a flair for provocative fun. They take comfort in humor and often play the role of the resident trickster, ensuring that no moment goes without a good laugh.

Gloomster

In contrast to the Happy Camper, the Gloomster tends to be subdued, sluggish, and prone to earnest brooding. They often expect doom and failure, inflating problems into insurmountable catastrophes. As the book explains, “As Gloomsters, our main emotional state is one of sadness.” This type of thinker may struggle with optimism and often sees the world through a lens of pessimism.

Agoniser

The Agoniser is the activist who mobilises for better welfare, runs for council, and takes pushback on the chin. They are plaintive, outraged, and driven to fix things. Society needs people like this, as they are willing to put themselves on the line for causes they believe in. The book notes that Agonisers can become drawn to anything that tugs at their heartstrings.

Hothead

The Hothead is the friend who insists on being right and doing things their way. They are excitable, irascible, and consumed by the problems of the moment. As the book states, “Not for no reason do Hotheads have a reputation for a forceful temper.” They are generally angry and sometimes extremely eager to defend their views.

Cool Cat

As a Cool Cat, you are the one who will always put someone up in a pinch and sit patiently and listen. You go along with pretty much anything but tend to hang back and let others sort themselves out. Described as “quiet, resolute, benevolent but a little remote,” this type of thinker values calmness and composure.

Keen Bean

If you’re a creative who is always on the move, imaginative, and enjoys meeting new people, you’re likely a Keen Bean. These thinkers are zesty, precocious, and always probing for new discoveries. They are often the first in line and last to leave, racing ahead and living in the future.

Worrywart

The Worrywart is the friend who overthinks a moment of disagreement, stewing long after it has passed. They are nervy, brittle, and prone to deliberation. These individuals see risk and danger everywhere they look, finding their mind easily paralysed by concerns and conjuring up ever more lurid worst-case scenarios.

Quibbler

As a Quibbler, you are likely to be slightly cagey and sceptical, with a desire to pick apart people’s work. Some people see perfection as a journey, not just a destination. Quibblers always ask that extra question and make it clear whenever they disapprove of the answer. They may have a low bar for getting bored, shutting off and turning away, or they may find it hard to handle anything offensive.

Reveller

Finally, the Reveller is the friend that sweeps others up, gives them undivided attention, and deluges them with thoughtful gifts. They are dreamy, magnetic, and overflowing with more to give. For Revellers, the act of paying attention itself is deeply meaningful. They are highly attuned to what is happening around them and enjoy giving generously to those they care about.

Dr Ostrowski suggests that while a test can give an idea of which thinker type you are, you’re actually probably a combination of several. He told the Daily Mail, “I think it’s very rare for anybody to be just one thinker-type. Much more common is that we’re a mixture of two or three main ones, with perhaps a few more sitting quietly in the background too.” So, whether you’re a mix of Happy Camper and Worrywart or something entirely different, understanding these thinking styles can help us navigate the complexities of human interaction.
