A Significant Return to Windsor
The Prince and Princess of Wales made a welcome appearance at this year’s Easter celebrations in Windsor, marking their first time joining the royal family for the holiday since 2023. This year’s event was particularly notable as it signified a shift in the royal family’s dynamics, with Prince William, Kate, and their three children making their return after two years of private stays at their Norfolk country home.
Kate had previously revealed her cancer diagnosis at the start of the Easter school holidays in 2024, which influenced the family’s decision to stay away from public events. However, this year, their presence at the Easter Sunday service on April 5 indicated a change in their approach.
Why the Wales Family Returned
The Wales family were not the only ones making changes this year. Several other royal relatives were quietly excluded from the guest list, resulting in a more intimate gathering than previous years. Prince William and Princess Catherine joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, and the Duke of Edinburgh for the Easter Sunday service at St George’s Chapel.
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie opted for alternative plans with the King’s approval. This scaled-back lineup is believed to reflect King Charles’ vision for a more streamlined monarchy. It also highlights the evolving power dynamics within the royal family.

One particular absence played a crucial role in the Wales family’s return. The family had skipped the gathering in 2025 due to the inclusion of the former Prince Andrew. Although he was removed from royal duties in late 2019, he continued to attend select public events, including Easter, which reportedly caused tension with the Prince of Wales.
According to Russell Myers’ biography William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, William was determined to see his uncle removed from all visible aspects of royal life following Andrew’s controversial Newsnight interview. “He never much liked his uncle and wanted him out of the picture immediately before the rot further set in,” a source told Myers.
With the disgraced former Duke of York now relocated to the Sandringham Estate after being evicted from Royal Lodge, the path was finally clear for William and Kate to return to the Windsor event with their children.
A Symbolic Moment
Their return is seen as significant, supporting King Charles’ broader effort to signal cohesion and continuity at a pivotal moment for the monarchy. The event marked the first time the Wales family attended the Easter Sunday service in Windsor since 2023.
