“They’d be epic”: Fans Dream of Season 3 Cast After Finale

Last One Laughing’s second season has proven to be just as successful as its first for Amazon Prime Video. The show returned with a fresh group of British comedians, alongside returning champion Bob Mortimer, all challenged to maintain a straight face over six hours while trying to make their fellow participants laugh. In the end, it was David Mitchell who emerged victorious after an intense final round that came down to him and Sam Campbell.

Now, fans are wondering who will take on the challenge in the upcoming third season. While David Mitchell is expected to return and defend his title, Amazon has already announced that a third season of the locked room comedy is in the works, along with a Halloween special. Both seasons will feature host Jimmy Carr returning to the surveillance state room, alongside his deputy Roisin Conaty.

Readers have shared their thoughts on who should be the next comedians to enter the giant funhouse. Here are some of the names they suggested:

Karl Pilkington

The 53-year-old presenter is best known for his work with comic legends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. He’s also the face of An Idiot Abroad. In recent years, he has appeared in several IMDb credits, including comedy-adjacent shows like Rain Dogs and Ludwig.

While Karl Pilkington may not be an out-and-out comedian, reader Warren White believes he would still be a great fit. They wrote on Facebook: “Not strictly a comedian but Karl Pilkington would slay.” His acting career has shown enough comedic talent to match the likes of Daisy May Cooper from the first season.

Alex Horne

Taskmaster fans will immediately recognize Alex Horne as the co-host of the show alongside Greg Davies. He cut his comedy teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and has since become a staple of the Channel 4 series, which has featured virtually every British comedian.

Reader Simon Woodley believes Horne would bring a “brilliant joker” to the show. With his experience in high-pressure, gag-a-minute situations, he would certainly be up to the challenge. His recent 24-hour singathon for Stand Up To Cancer, which turned chaotic when Mr Blobby made an unexpected appearance, shows he can handle anything.

Ricky Gervais

If we’re talking about a fancast for season three, why not aim high? Ricky Gervais is one of the most successful and well-known comedians working today, despite his controversial reputation. However, he tends to focus on his Netflix stand-up specials rather than mainstream comedy shows.

Despite this, reader Dean Pilling suggested: “He’d never do it but Ricky Gervais would be good.” While it seems unlikely, his presence could bring a unique energy to the show.

Bill Bailey

The comedian-turned-Strictly Come Dancing victor has been a regular on the comedy panel show circuit, appearing on shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News for You, and QI. With over 30 years of stand-up experience, he would bring a wealth of material to the show.

Reader Padraig Stapleton believes Bill Bailey would be “epic” if he joined. His panel show background makes him a perfect fit for Last One Laughing’s format.

Sarah Millican

Sarah Millican is another panel show fixture, having appeared on Mock The Week and Would I Lie To You? Since winning Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008, she has become a household name in comedy.

Reader Tony Stratton suggested she would be a “great” choice, even if her natural chuckle might make it hard for her to keep a straight face. She is also married to fellow comedian Gary Delaney, which could add an interesting dynamic if they both participated.

Honourable Mention: Sean Lock

Several readers mentioned Sean Lock, the former captain of 8 Out of 10 Cats, who passed away in 2021. His absence was deeply felt by fans, and many expressed how much they would have loved to see him on the show.

Den Kelly wrote on Facebook: “Sean Lock would have been absolute gold. May he rest in peace.” Mike Pasmore added: “Would have loved to see Sean Lock on this.”

As for whether David Mitchell will return for season three, Amazon has not officially confirmed it yet. However, it seems likely, given that Bob Mortimer was brought back after his win. There is also a strong fanbase eager to see David again.

On Reddit, user Pepys-a-Doodlebugs wrote: “I hope they do winner stays on again and we get Lee Mack in the next series as he would really go after David and I’d love to see it.” Another user, Dragonbird, agreed: “Totally agree on this. David just shone, whereas Sam didn’t participate that much. I’ve never seen David funny in those ways before – I love the rants, but that stand-up was something else.”

Last One Laughing is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
