Thuram Blasts Mourinho

Football World Reacts as Allegations of Racism Mar Champions League Clash

A recent Champions League fixture between Benfica and Real Madrid has been overshadowed by serious allegations of racist abuse, sparking a heated debate within the football community and drawing sharp criticism of prominent figures. The incident, which occurred during the match where Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory, saw Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior accuse Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of directing racist insults towards him.

Following the match, when pressed for comment on the alleged racist incident, Benfica coach José Mourinho adopted a cautious stance, refraining from a clear condemnation. Instead, his remarks appeared to shift focus, controversially suggesting that Vinícius Júnior’s goal celebrations might have provoked such reactions. This ambiguous response from the experienced manager immediately drew widespread attention and, notably, strong disapproval from former France international Lilian Thuram.

Lilian Thuram Slams Mourinho’s “Pathetic” Stance on Racism

Speaking to the French sports publication L’Équipe, Thuram, a World Cup winner in 1998, did not hold back in his criticism of Mourinho’s comments. He articulated that the nature of Mourinho’s words revealed a deeper issue, explaining why progress in combating racism in football remains elusive.

“The nature of his words says a lot about why we are not moving forward,” Thuram stated. “Mourinho is a great coach with an exceptional career; he has worked with many Black players in his life and yet that does not prevent him, first, from doubting the truth of the racist act and, second, from questioning the victim’s responsibility through the way he celebrated his goal.”

Thuram emphatically argued that it is entirely unacceptable to attempt to rationalise or diminish a racist act by referencing a player’s on-field conduct or celebrations. He firmly believes that the racism Vinícius Júnior allegedly experienced is intrinsically linked to the colour of his skin, and not a consequence of his behaviour during the game.

The former defender expressed his bewilderment and anger at Mourinho’s perspective. “But how can he say that? Who are you, Mr. Mourinho, to decide what Vinícius is allowed to do or not?” Thuram questioned. He perceived a sense of “superiority and white narcissism” in Mourinho’s judgment. Thuram reiterated that the racist act was not related to Vinícius’s behaviour but to his skin colour. “Mourinho suggests that it could possibly be Vinicius’ fault. That he somehow asked for it. It is utterly violent,” he added, highlighting the perceived victim-blaming inherent in the coach’s remarks.

Visibly incensed by the comments, the 1998 World Cup champion labelled Mourinho’s stance as “pathetic.” He expressed regret that a coach with such extensive experience in the sport would adopt such a position, arguing that it actively hinders the collective effort required to effectively combat racism in football.

Real Madrid Officially Backs Vinícius Júnior, UEFA Investigation Underway

The club confirmed that it has provided UEFA with all available evidence pertaining to the incidents that transpired on Tuesday, February 17, during their Champions League match in Lisbon against Benfica.

The club also extended its gratitude for the “unanimous support, backing and affection” received by Vinícius Júnior from the global football community.

The statement concluded with a firm commitment from Real Madrid: “Real Madrid will continue to work, in collaboration with all institutions, to eradicate racism, violence and hatred in sport and in society.” This declaration signals the club’s unwavering dedication to addressing these critical issues within the sport.
