Tiger Banned for ‘Silly’ Strike as Untried Ruck Looms

Richmond Faces Ruck Crisis After Samson Ryan’s Suspension

Richmond is facing a significant challenge in their ruck department following the suspension of Samson Ryan, who has been banned for one match after being found guilty of striking during a game against Port Adelaide. This incident comes as a further blow to the team’s already strained ruck stocks, prompting discussions about the potential AFL debut of basketball convert Oliver Hayes-Brown.

Ryan, who was stepping in for injured captain Toby Nankervis, struck opponent Jordon Sweet approximately 80 meters off the ball during the Tigers’ 42-point loss on Saturday. The incident was classified as intentional conduct with medium impact and body contact, resulting in a free kick at the top of the goal square and costing the Tigers a crucial goal in the third quarter.

Richmond coach Adem Yze expressed his disappointment over the incident but praised Ryan’s efforts to make amends. “You can’t defend behind undisciplined acts,” Yze said. “I’ll cop it if it’s an execution error and we’re just not as good as them, but when it’s something like that they can just crush your spirit. He just came in then and apologised for it.”

Ryan, who had recently overcome a plantar fascia problem, was making his first AFL appearance of the season. “For a young ruckman who hasn’t played this season, and just half a game in the VFL, he was really important for us,” Yze added. “His response post that (striking incident), the next clearance, we won clearly, and that’s what I want him to really focus on. He needed to pay back the mistake, and all I can ask for is that next centre bounce, to jump in hard and pay it back 10-fold.”

Injuries Continue to Plague the Team

The team is currently dealing with a major personnel crisis, as they are already without several key players. Injured talls include Toby Nankervis (hamstring), Tom Lynch (hamstring), Harry Armstrong (foot), and Tom Sims (elbow/foot). Additionally, key backs Noah Balta (hamstring soreness) and Josh Gibcus (soreness) have also joined the growing list of injured players.

In light of these challenges, Mykelti Lefau and Ben Miller could provide some relief against the physical Giant Kieren Briggs. However, the most intriguing option is 208cm forward Oliver Hayes-Brown, who has been making waves in the VFL. The 25-year-old, who previously played for the NBL’s Perth Wildcats, impressed with 22 disposals, 11 clearances, and 19 hit-outs in the VFL against St Kilda on Sunday.

Other Incidents and Suspensions

Meanwhile, Sydney’s Angus Sheldrick has also faced consequences for his actions on the field. He has been handed a one-match ban for a forearm strike to the head of West Coast defender Reuben Ginbey. The incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact and high contact.
