Unsurprisingly, NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan has been identified as the richest athlete in history. According to Sportico’s estimates, Jordan has earned over $4.5 billion when adjusted for inflation. His dominance in the basketball world was not only due to his playing career but also his extensive empire of shoes and endorsements, which significantly boosted his wealth.
Jordan’s financial success is so substantial that the combined earnings of all 50 athletes on the list amount to around $56 billion. This highlights just how far ahead he is from the rest of the competition.
Tiger Woods and the Top Five
Following Jordan in the rankings is another former Nike athlete, Tiger Woods. Adjusted for inflation, Woods has earned over $2.8 billion throughout his long and successful career. Sportico determined the list by consulting industry insiders, conducting their own research, and incorporating historical estimates from other reputable outlets such as Forbes and Sports Illustrated. The calculations included a wide range of income sources, such as salaries, bonuses, prize money, purses, endorsements, licensing, royalties, memorabilia, book deals, media appearances, and appearance fees. In some cases, golf course design fees were also taken into account.
Additionally, equity stakes in sponsor companies after sales were completed were included in the final figures, providing a comprehensive view of each athlete’s financial achievements.
