Louisiana State University (LSU) women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, a figure known for her fierce competitive spirit on the court, recently revealed a deeply personal and startling health ordeal that nearly cost her her life. Back in 2018, Mulkey experienced what was initially diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that, while uncomfortable and potentially debilitating, was managed. However, the story took a dramatic turn in 2023. Mulkey recounted that while she was “a little bored,” she noticed a peculiar tingling sensation in the middle finger of her left hand. This persistent feeling, though not outwardly alarming, prompted her to seek medical advice.
Doctors initially suspected carpal tunnel syndrome, and as a precautionary measure, given her history of disc replacement surgery in 2018, they recommended a neck scan. This scan came back clear, offering no immediate cause for concern.
A Radiologist’s Call and a Life-Altering Diagnosis
The true gravity of the situation emerged a few days later when a radiologist contacted Mulkey with unexpected news. A plaque had been discovered in her carotid arteries. This discovery prompted an immediate appointment with a cardiologist and a subsequent stress test. The results were far from reassuring. Mulkey vividly recalled her doctor’s concern about her heart’s inability to pump blood “faster.”
The cardiologist explained, “It looks like there’s a little blockage going on. We’ve got to do a cath.” This procedure, a cardiac catheterisation, revealed a staggering 95-99 percent blockage in one of her major coronary arteries – the left anterior descending artery, which is also the largest artery supplying blood to the heart.
Emergency Procedure and a Remarkable Recovery
In June 2023, Mulkey underwent a critical procedure to address the severe blockage. Two stents were successfully inserted to restore blood flow. What made this experience particularly shocking for Mulkey was the complete absence of any typical warning signs. She stated, “During the whole process, I never felt any chest pain, no breathlessness or no warning signs of any kind.” She expressed her ongoing disbelief, remarking, “I’m still kind of in shock that we accidentally found this.”
Her medical team confirmed that without this timely and complex intervention, the LSU coach would have almost certainly suffered a heart attack.
