Keano Kini Shines in Titans’ Dominant Win
It’s hard to believe there was ever a debate about who should be the Titans’ fullback, given Keano Kini’s outstanding performance in the NRL. Kini delivered what many consider his best 80 minutes of the season, playing a crucial role in Gold Coast’s 52-10 victory over the Eels at CommBank Stadium. This win marked a rare triumph for the Titans in Sydney and was their second-highest score in the competition this season.
From the moment Josh Hannay took charge as coach, he made it clear that Kini would be his first-choice fullback. The small but speedy player proved him right with a performance that could be described as “video game numbers.”
Kini was instrumental in setting up the Titans’ first four tries. His standout moment came with a breathtaking spin move that allowed AJ Brimson to score. Additionally, a long-range break following a kick led to Sialetili Faeamani scoring a try just 15 minutes into the match, making it 18-0.
In the second half, Kini broke through the middle to set up Jayden Campbell. By the end of the game, Kini had recorded 226 metres, four assists, three line-breaks, and nine tackle busts.
Other players also contributed to the team’s attacking success. Jojo Fifita picked up a loose ball and linked up with Phil Sami, who scored an impressive 85-metre try. Campbell added another highlight by intercepting a pass, sealing the victory for the Titans.
Defensive Struggles for the Eels
The Eels continue to face significant challenges on defense. After six rounds, they are sitting at the bottom of the table, with the worst defensive record in the NRL this season. They conceded nine tries and missed 43 tackles against a Gold Coast team that hasn’t been particularly strong in attack.
So far this season, the Eels have allowed 226 points, with both their edges and middle exposed by the Titans. This is a major concern for coach Jason Ryles, especially after Cooper Bai easily barged his way to the line from close range in the second half.
Their attacking play wasn’t much better either. Their first try came off what appeared to be a forward pass, and the crowd responded with boos as the visitors reached 50 points.
Injury Crisis Hits the Eels
The Eels are dealing with a growing injury crisis. Powerhouse forwards Sam Tuivaiti and Kelma Tuilagi are set to miss their next game after suffering head knocks during Sunday’s match.
Currently, the Eels are without J’maine Hopgood, Matt Doorey, and Bailey Simonsson for the rest of the season. Isaiah Iongi and Jonah Pezet are also sidelined, adding to the team’s woes.
Tuivaiti was only on the field for about 10 minutes when his head collided with Arama Hau’s hip while attempting a tackle. He was immediately ruled out of the game, highlighting the severity of the situation.
