TLC’s Chilli Clarifies Political Stance Amidst Fan Backlash
Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas, a beloved member of the iconic 90s girl group TLC, has found herself at the centre of a social media storm, addressing fan outrage over reports of her making donations to Republican fundraising groups and an alleged accidental repost of a conspiracy theory targeting former First Lady Michelle Obama. The 55-year-old singer took to Instagram over the weekend to set the record straight, aiming to quell the digital firestorm.
Thomas emphatically stated, “I WANT TO BE CLEAR: I am not MAGA and do not support any of the many policies that are causing great harm to the American people.” She explained that a recent donation was made in error, admitting, “I made a mistake too many make: I did not read the fine print.” The singer elaborated that she believed she was contributing to causes close to her heart, specifically those combating human trafficking and supporting veterans. She highlighted her personal connection to the latter, noting that her father is a veteran, and expressed her lifelong passion for children.

Concluding her statement on the donation issue, Thomas conveyed a sense of learning from the experience, requesting understanding: “I have learned a valuable lesson and ask for grace as I navigate this.”
The controversy surrounding the alleged repost of a post critical of Michelle Obama was addressed in a separate segment on her Instagram. Thomas appeared in a video clip, expressing her deep concern over the circulating information. “Hey guys, I wanted to come on here to address a few things that circulated on the internet that’s very concerning to me,” she began.
She was quick to express her profound respect for the former First Lady, stating, “Let me say this first. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Michelle Obama and I would never say or do anything that is disrespectful to her or to any woman. I would never do that.”
Thomas explained that she was completely unaware of the repost until she began receiving numerous calls and text messages from concerned individuals. Upon checking her page, she discovered the alleged accidental share. She described herself as not being particularly “computer savvy” and explained how, in attempting to navigate her social media, her thumb inadvertently hit the repost button. “And I see that all of them – all of these buttons – are very close to each other and clearly I was scrolling and my thumb hit the repost button,” she clarified, reiterating, “Again I had no clue that something like this happened until I got all the calls.”

Reports suggest that Thomas’s donations included an amount of $210.60 to WinRed, a Republican fundraising platform. This incident is not the first time the singer has faced public scrutiny for her statements. In 2017, she generated significant backlash after expressing the sentiment that “all lives matter” during an interview with U.K. Channel 4 News.
At the time, Thomas had explained her perspective by saying, “For me, all lives matter, because there’s a time when different groups are targeted for different things. Even with the police brutality against these young black boys and stuff like that, all of that kind of stuff is wrong. Even if it was a Caucasian teen kid this was happening to, it’s just not right.” She further commented on the potential for abuse of power, suggesting, “Some people will take that authoritative position and go crazy with it, obviously. I think that before people are hired in these positions, they need to do some kind of better background check or mental stability check on them to see if they can really handle being in a position like that.”

Amidst these controversies, TLC is gearing up for a highly anticipated reunion tour. Thomas and her long-time bandmate Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins are set to embark on the “It’s Iconic Tour,” which will also feature fellow iconic groups Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue. The tour is scheduled to commence on August 15th in Franklin, Tennessee, and will wrap up in October in Concord, California. Fans across North America can look forward to shows in various cities, including Des Moines, Tampa, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Toronto.
The duo recently graced the stage at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles, showcasing their enduring musical prowess. TLC, originally formed in 1990, comprised Thomas, Watkins, and the late Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes. The trio achieved global fame with a string of hits, including “No Scrubs” and “Creep.” Tragically, Lopes passed away in 2002 at the age of 30 following a car accident in Honduras.

In a past interview on the program Good Morning Britain, Thomas was questioned about any discussions regarding replacing Lopes in the group after her untimely death. She firmly denied any such consideration, stating, “We heard from so many people, in the business, that surprised us more than anything. The fans, not so much. It was never ever a thought to replace her, no one in TLC can be replaced. Nobody can fill those shoes.” Since Lopes’ passing, Thomas and Watkins have continued to perform as a duo, honouring the legacy of TLC.
