Tom Dumont battles Parkinson’s daily as No Doubt’s star faces challenge

Tom Dumont, the guitarist of the American rock band No Doubt, has shared his personal journey with early-onset Parkinson’s disease. The 58-year-old musician, known for his role in the band since its formation in 1986 alongside Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, and Adrian Young, recently disclosed his diagnosis on social media.

In an Instagram video, Tom explained that he had been experiencing symptoms for several years before seeking medical attention. He visited a neurologist and underwent various tests, which led to his diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s. Despite the challenges, he emphasized that he is still able to play music and guitar, expressing optimism about his ability to continue performing.

“I’ve been facing difficulties, but I can still play music,” Tom said. “It’s been a struggle every day. I’ll make another video with details about what Parkinson’s entails. The good news is, I can still play music. I can still play guitar. I’ve been doing really well.”

He decided to share his diagnosis publicly after being inspired by others who had done the same. “I think it helps erase some of the stigma and raises awareness, obviously, and awareness is really important for prevention and for research,” he added.

No Doubt recently announced their reunion for their first shows in 14 years, set to take place at the Sphere in Las Vegas from May 6 to June 13. Tom confirmed he will be joining his bandmates on stage, describing the preparation as “very fun.” He reflected on the experience of revisiting old footage, photographs, and songs, and how it made him grateful for his musical journey.

“Looking through old footage and looking at old photographs and relearning old songs and rehearsing and creating all the video stuff for the screens at the Sphere, it’s kind of made me think about how grateful I am for the life I’ve gotten to lead as a musician all these years,” he said. “And it’s thanks to our families and our friends and listeners, and you and everyone who’s come to our shows over the years. Thank you. I’m really excited about the shows. I can’t wait to see everybody. And thank you for listening.”

Fans and fellow musicians responded with overwhelming support. Adrian Young, the band’s drummer, wrote: “My friend, bandmate, and hero… I love you brother.” Tony Kanal added: “Love you beyond words my friend. Can’t wait to get on stage with you again.” Fans also shared messages of encouragement, with many expressing hope for Tom’s health and appreciation for his openness.

The band Garbage also sent their support: “Sending you so much love Tom. You are such a special soul. What a man.”

Tom, who shares three sons with his wife Mieke—Ace, Rio, and Koa—has remained positive despite his diagnosis. His resilience and dedication to his craft have inspired many, especially as he prepares for the upcoming performances with No Doubt.

The band’s residency comes after a long hiatus, with their last tour in 2009 and a brief reunion in 2012. In 2024, they surprised fans with a performance at Coachella. Frontwoman Gwen Stefani spoke about the band’s unexpected break, mentioning the challenges of balancing family life with their careers.

“Everybody’s lives just happened. You know, the time we stopped [in 2015] was when I was going through my horrible family breakup – I don’t like to say the word ‘divorce,’ because it’s just such a disgusting word. But my life just blew up, it really did.”

Despite the challenges, the band remains committed to their fans and their music. Gwen described the Las Vegas residency as a chance to “go back in time to relive our history, while also creating something new in a way we never could have imagined.”

Tom expressed excitement about performing with his bandmates again, stating that they “feel the magic” when they are on stage together. He also thanked their fans for their continued support, saying, “We’re stoked to play together again for our fans, to celebrate their years of love and support.”

As No Doubt prepares for their upcoming shows, Tom’s courage and determination serve as a reminder of the power of music and community. His journey highlights the importance of raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease and the ongoing efforts to find treatments and support for those affected.
