Understanding the Hidden Dangers of Cruising
Cruises are often seen as the ultimate vacation, offering a blend of luxury, relaxation, and adventure. With all-you-can-eat meals, unlimited drinks, and a variety of activities, it’s easy to imagine a perfect getaway. However, according to travel expert Jason, there is a serious hidden danger that many people overlook when planning their cruise.
Jason, who runs a podcast called The Travel Scouts with his wife Kellie, has shared insights on various travel topics, including cruise safety. In a recent episode, he highlighted the risks associated with visiting certain ports that may not be as safe as they seem. He emphasized that while cruising can be enjoyable, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential dangers at each destination.
Key Dangerous Cruise Ports to Be Aware Of
Jason studied crime statistics and government warnings to compile a list of the most dangerous cruise ports in the world. Here are some of the areas that travelers should be cautious about:
Belize City
Belize City is one of the first destinations on Jason’s list. The US State Department currently has a level three travel advisory for the city, urging tourists to reconsider travel to the southside due to high crime rates. Violent crimes such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder are common in this area, often linked to gang activity. Local police lack the resources and training to handle serious crimes effectively, and emergency medical services are often unavailable or delayed.
Jason, who has visited the city multiple times, described it as a “very sketchy area.” He advised staying within the secure port area and booking excursions through the cruise line to ensure safety.
Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago, located just off the coast of Venezuela, is another destination that requires caution. The country has experienced significant violence and organized crime, leading to a state of emergency in recent years. The US State Department has issued a level three travel advisory, warning of serious risks from crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Gang activity, including narcotics trafficking, is common in this region.
Montego Bay and Kingston in Jamaica
Jamaica has five different cruise ports, but two of them—Montego Bay and Kingston—are considered high-risk areas. The US State Department has issued a level four travel advisory for parts of both cities, advising against travel due to serious risks. Jason recommended avoiding solo taxi rides and sticking to the secure port area or booking excursions through reputable companies.
Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Manzanillo in Mexico
Mexico is a popular cruise destination, but some areas pose significant risks. According to the US State Department, the west coast of Mexico has several cities with level three and four travel advisories. Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Manzanillo are among the most vulnerable. Recent violence between drug cartels and law enforcement has led to canceled cruise stops and shelter-in-place orders for tourists.
Haiti
Haiti has been given a level four travel advisory by the US State Department, warning of kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, and limited healthcare. The country has been under a state of emergency since March 2024, with widespread gang violence and frequent crimes such as robbery, carjacking, and kidnappings. Royal Caribbean has paused visits to its private port in Labadee due to the increased crime rate.
Colombia
Cartagena de Indias in Colombia is another destination that requires vigilance. The US State Department has issued a level three travel advisory, urging travelers to reconsider due to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. Jason advised staying in groups and being aware of surroundings while visiting this area.
Guatemala
Guatemala has two primary cruise ports, Puerto Quetzal and Santo Tomás de Castilla. While the country is beautiful, it has active warnings from various countries, including Canada and the US, which advise caution due to high levels of violent crime. The US State Department lists Guatemala as a level three travel advisory, suggesting travelers reconsider their plans.
