Trafford Caught Off Guard by Donnarumma’s Arrival at City
James Trafford, the promising young goalkeeper, has revealed his surprise at Manchester City’s pursuit and subsequent acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma last summer. The move for Donnarumma, who arrived from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day for a reported £26 million, significantly altered Trafford’s immediate prospects at the club. This development has left Trafford, a player who had started the opening three Premier League fixtures of the season, contemplating his future at the Etihad Stadium.
Trafford had previously chosen to re-join City from Burnley for £27 million, spurning interest from Newcastle United, with the clear expectation of competing for the coveted number one goalkeeping position. However, the arrival of Donnarumma has reshaped this landscape, prompting Trafford to acknowledge the unexpected turn of events.
“I didn’t expect the situation to happen, but it’s happened, so you just get on with it,” the 23-year-old stated. When pressed for clarification on whether he was referring to Donnarumma’s signing, Trafford confirmed, “Yeah. It’s happened so I’ll work very hard every day and then see what happens, give it my best shot.”
The timing of Donnarumma’s potential arrival was not something Trafford had anticipated when he committed his future to City. “No, no,” he responded when asked if City making a move for Donnarumma had been on his radar when he signed. “It’s just another experience to add to my career and yeah, it has been good learning.”
It is understood that Manchester City had initiated contact regarding Donnarumma earlier in the transfer window. However, initial negotiations with PSG reportedly saw the French club demanding a transfer fee in the region of £35 million.
Reports from December indicated that Trafford was actively seeking a move during the winter transfer window. This proactive approach was reportedly driven by concerns about potentially missing out on a place in England’s World Cup squad. Manager Pep Guardiola is believed to have impressed upon Trafford his importance to the club’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup campaigns. “Obviously everyone knows what’s going on with me so I’ve just got to play as well as I can whenever I play,” he remarked. “Let’s take it a day at a time and try and work as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens.”

Addressing his contractual situation, Trafford stated, “I’ve obviously got a contract. I don’t know what happens next season. I just know that I’ll just take it a day at a time and try and improve.”
He also offered a positive assessment of his new goalkeeping colleague. “He (Donnarumma) is a great fella, he is a lovely man. We both train as hard as we can and try to improve ourselves.
