The Australian dream of hitting the open road and exploring the vast, beautiful country in a caravan is facing an unexpected and daunting challenge: the soaring cost of diesel. For one Sydney family, this dream has become a precarious balancing act, as astronomical fuel prices threaten to derail their epic adventure.
Lisa and Blake Walsh, along with their two children and beloved dog, made the life-altering decision to sell their home last year, packing up their lives into a caravan for what they envisioned as an unforgettable journey across Australia. The first seven months have been, by all accounts, idyllic. However, the ever-increasing price of diesel has cast a long shadow over their aspirations, making it increasingly difficult to keep their wheels turning.

The family recently experienced a stark reality check at a petrol station in Rosebery, on Tasmania’s rugged west coast. The bill for a single fuel stop, which didn’t even fill their tank completely, amounted to a staggering $495. Lisa shared the family’s growing concern, explaining, “We have two kids and a dog, we’ve got our whole lives with us, so we are very heavy and fuel was already our biggest expense.”
The escalating fuel costs have had a devastating impact on their meticulously planned budget. “And now that that’s completely blown out of the water, our whole budget’s shot,” Lisa admitted. “We’ve really got to go completely back to the drawing board.”
At the time of their fill-up, diesel at a Tas Petroleum station in Rosebery was priced at an eye-watering $3.09.9 per litre. This figure is significantly higher than the average diesel price of around $3 per litre in Tasmania, according to FuelCheck data. The thought of paying even more is a genuine worry for the Walsh family. “We can’t afford to pay much more than this. Realistically, we’re going to drain our savings pretty quickly,” Lisa added, revealing the difficult conversations about their future. “We will just [have to] pull up somewhere and get some work.”
The Walsh family’s initial plan was to remain on the road for another two years, relying on the proceeds from their house sale to fund their travels. However, the current fuel price trajectory is forcing them to re-evaluate this timeline, fearing their savings could be depleted far sooner than anticipated.
The Ripple Effect: Other Travellers Feeling the Pinch
The Walsh family’s predicament is not an isolated incident. The financial pressure of high fuel costs is forcing many other travellers to reconsider their plans, with some already buckling under the strain. Caravan parks, which rely heavily on tourist traffic, are expressing concerns about potential empty sites, particularly during peak holiday periods like the upcoming Easter break.
“Some people that we know have just said that they’re going to stop and work,” Lisa observed, highlighting the difficult choices being made. The impact is visible online, with many travellers sharing their frustrations and cancellations. “I’ve seen cancellations left, right and centre online. People posting on Facebook groups saying, ‘Oh hey, I had this site booked over Easter, but we’re not going anymore’.”
Setting a Limit: The $4 Per Litre Threshold
Even seasoned travellers who are accustomed to the costs associated with the caravan lifestyle are finding themselves pushed to their financial limits. Brad and Karen, a couple from Sydney who regularly take their caravan out for holidays and weekend getaways, have established a personal threshold for diesel prices.
“Our personal limit is $4 per litre for diesel,” they explained to Nine.com.au. Despite the growing nationwide concern that fuel prices could indeed reach this alarming figure, the couple harbours a desperate hope that it won’t come to that.
“We haven’t cancelled trips yet, but now budgeting $1000 in fuel or $4/l – effectively doubling the budget to cover costs for our next short trip, then assess the next big trip on what happens with fuel costs,” Karen elaborated on their revised financial strategy. Their recent experience underscores the severity of the situation: “Our last tank was $120 for only 43 litres of diesel and 280km travelled.”
This situation raises serious questions about the accessibility of the quintessential Australian road trip experience. As fuel prices continue to climb, the dream of exploring the country at one’s own pace may become an increasingly unattainable luxury for many. The families and individuals seeking adventure on the open road are now faced with a difficult choice: dig deeper into savings, cut their journeys short, or perhaps even postpone their explorations altogether, all thanks to the relentless rise of diesel prices.
