Ryan Tubridy, the former long-serving presenter of Ireland’s beloved chat show, The Late Late Show, has revealed a surprising personal reflection on his tenure. After taking the helm from Pat Kenny in 2009 and guiding the iconic programme for almost 15 years until his departure in 2023, Tubridy is making a notable return to the Irish media landscape. His new ventures include the popular podcast, The Bookshelf, and a recent appearance on Virgin Media’s The Assembly.
The Unexpected Call to Host
Speaking on the Talking Bollox podcast, Tubridy recounted the moment he learned he would be the next host of The Late Late Show. The news, he admitted, was entirely unexpected. He described being discreetly ushered into a separate room, under strict instructions of secrecy, to prevent any premature leaks. The only person he was permitted to inform was his mother.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” Tubridy shared, recalling the surprise of the offer. “I had to be corralled into another room, because no one was allowed to know. I was allowed call my parents, and I remember calling my mum.” He light-heartedly recounted his proud announcement to his mother: “I was really proud and went: ‘Mum, you’re talking to the next presenter of The Late Late Show.’ and she said, ‘God, who is it?'” he joked.
A Wish for More Life Experience
Despite his significant success and becoming the second-longest-serving host in The Late Late Show‘s history, Tubridy confessed a personal wish: he wished he had taken on the role a few years later in his career. While he possessed considerable television experience, having previously fronted Tubridy Tonight, he felt he lacked the necessary depth of life experience at the time.
“If I’m being really honest, I wish I got it five years after [I got it],” Tubridy stated. “I think I needed a bit more experience of life under the belt.” He elaborated on his age at the time, noting, “[I was] about 31, 32. I’m no use with numbers – long story there,” he added with a chuckle. This sentiment suggests a desire for a more seasoned perspective when navigating the complexities of such a high-profile national broadcast.

New Horizons: Radio and Podcasts
Tubridy’s return to the airwaves is already well underway. Beyond his ongoing success with The Bookshelf Podcast, he recently announced a significant new role that he has described as his “dream job.” He is now a presenter on Times Radio, hosting a show every Sunday.
The new radio program, which commenced last week, promises a diverse and engaging lineup. “The show will combine everything from politics and history to books and cinema. Dream job!” Tubridy enthused. He confirmed that his existing commitments remain unaffected, stating, “Normal business continues on The Bookshelf podcast (Season 5 in production) and on Onic every weekend. Two more apps worth downloading!” This multi-platform approach showcases Tubridy’s continued passion for engaging with audiences across various media.
