Thomas Tuchel’s tenure as England manager has been extended, securing his commitment through to the UEFA European Championship in 2028. This significant contract renewal means the German tactician will remain at the helm of the Three Lions for an extended period, leading them beyond the upcoming World Cup.
Tuchel initially took the reins in January 2025, stepping into the role following Gareth Southgate’s departure after the Euro 2024 tournament. During the interim, Under-21 manager Lee Carsley provided a steady hand for four months. His original contract was slated to conclude after the 2026 World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, this new agreement prolongs his stay with the national team by an additional two years.
This extension is particularly noteworthy as it ensures Tuchel will lead England into a home European Championship. The former Chelsea manager views this as an exceptional opportunity, with the 2028 edition of the tournament being jointly hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. The pinnacle of this prestigious event will be the final, scheduled to be held at the iconic Wembley Stadium.
“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England,” Tuchel expressed. “It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”
He further elaborated on the support he has received, stating, “I have had so much support from Mark (Bullingham, Football Association CEO), all my colleagues at The FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job. Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”
Impact on Club Management Speculation
Tuchel’s renewed commitment to the England national team effectively removes him from the anticipated managerial merry-go-round within the Premier League later this year. There had been considerable speculation linking Manchester United with a potential move for Tuchel following the World Cup.
The Football Association was eager to finalise his future promptly. This proactive approach aims to quell any lingering speculation and prevent it from becoming a disruptive distraction as the team prepares for the upcoming summer tournament.

Tuchel’s Rejuvenation in the England Role
Back in November, Tuchel alluded to feeling “re-energised” by his role with England, hinting at his openness to extending his contract. He reflected on his extensive experience in professional and club football, identifying the factors that contribute to his personal satisfaction and optimal performance.
“I know from many years in professional and club football what makes me happy and what brings the best out of me. I feel re-energised and I love to work with the players and be close to the Premier League,” he stated. “I know also the level of support and trust that I have. I feel that and I know very well I need that to be the best version of myself. This is everything in place and I’m very relaxed.”
Tuchel acknowledged his initial preference for a shorter contract, explaining his reasoning: “I was the one in the first place to push for a short contract, to streamline it and go to the World Cup, because I was not fully aware of the job and what is needed and the demands, and how I would feel in the job.”

World Cup Preparations and Past Results
The immediate focus for Tuchel and his squad remains the World Cup. The FA is aware of his contentment and positive sentiment towards the role, acknowledging their significant contribution to his revitalised state.
Under Tuchel’s guidance, England has enjoyed a flawless World Cup qualifying campaign. They secured eight victories in eight matches, comfortably topping Group K. Their opponents in the group stage of the finals will be Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
A solitary setback in Tuchel’s tenure as England manager occurred in a friendly match in June. Senegal emerged victorious with a 3-1 win, marking the first time an African nation had defeated the Three Lions at the City Ground.
Tuchel, who achieved Champions League glory with Chelsea in 2021 and has previously managed esteemed clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, will commence England’s World Cup campaign with a fixture against Croatia on Wednesday, 17 June, in Dallas.
