Manchester United Eyes Champions League Comeback After Tough Bayern Munich First Leg
Despite a narrow 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Marc Skinner remains optimistic about his side’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals. The Red Devils were edged out in a hard-fought encounter, with a late strike from Momoko Tanikawa proving to be the decisive goal.
Bayern had initially taken the lead through Pernille Harder, only for Maya Le Tissier to pull United level from the penalty spot. Hanna Lundkvist then put the home side ahead with a header, but Harder struck again to restore parity before Tanikawa’s late winner.

Skinner expressed his frustration with the goals conceded, stating, “I’m frustrated with all the three goals – I don’t think they had to particularly earn them. I felt that we left the spaces for Pernille Harder to run through twice.” However, he quickly turned his attention to the team’s resilience and determination. “What I know about this team is that they’ll be open and honest with that and obviously we’ve got another leg to try and turn it around and fix it,” he added.
The United boss believes the performance wasn’t down to naivety but rather the challenge of facing a high-calibre opponent. He observed that Bayern altered their usual possession-based approach, opting for a more direct style of play. “Bayern changed their game. They’re usually a possession-based team but were more direct tonight,” Skinner noted. “We’ve felt that now and we must turn it around. We’re still in this tie for sure. Now we need to go to the Allianz and win.”
A Gruelling Schedule Ahead
Manchester United faces a demanding schedule in the lead-up to the second leg against Bayern Munich. They are set to lock horns with fierce rivals and Women’s Super League leaders, Manchester City, this Saturday. This derby clash presents a significant test for Skinner’s squad as they navigate their European aspirations alongside domestic competition.

Skinner acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming fixtures, stating, “It will challenge us, it will take us to the depths, but the carrot is there for us in both games. We expect it to be difficult.” The prospect of facing both City and then travelling to Germany for a crucial Champions League second leg highlights the significant hurdles United must overcome in the coming weeks.
Bayern Munich Urges Continued Focus
On the opposing bench, Bayern Munich manager Jose Barcala remained grounded despite the first-leg victory. He emphasised the importance of maintaining humility and a forward-looking perspective. “We need to stay with our feet on the earth, humble and keep looking forward for the next game,” Barcala urged.
He stressed the need for his team to learn from the experience and make necessary adjustments for the return fixture. “It’s important we learn things from this game and adjust for the second leg,” he concluded. The German outfit understands that the tie is far from over and a strong performance will be required to secure their place in the final four of Europe’s premier club competition.
The journey to the Women’s Champions League semi-finals is a gruelling one, and Manchester United will need to demonstrate resilience, tactical acumen, and unwavering determination to overcome their deficit against Bayern Munich. The upcoming clash with Manchester City will serve as a crucial barometer of their current form and mental fortitude as they prepare for the decisive second leg in Germany.
