Major Setback in US World Cup Preparations
The United States men’s national team (USMNT) has faced a significant challenge in its preparations for the upcoming World Cup after striker Patrick Agyemang suffered a serious injury. The 25-year-old, who plays for Derby County, was forced to leave the field during a match against Stoke City on Monday afternoon, leaving the stadium in tears and being taken away on a stretcher.
Agyemang landed awkwardly after jumping for the ball during the game, which Derby County won 2-0. Medical staff immediately attended to him, and he was later taken for scans to determine the extent of his injury. The initial concern is that he may have suffered an Achilles tendon injury, which could potentially end his hopes of participating in the World Cup.
Derby County head coach John Eustace expressed cautious optimism, stating: “He’s gone off for a scan. We’ll wait and see the results of that. Hopefully it’s not as bad as what it might be.” Meanwhile, a local outlet reported that the incident initially appeared to be minor before concerns about an Achilles injury emerged.

Agyemang had been a strong contender for a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup squad, having impressed with his performances in recent weeks. He has scored six goals in 14 appearances for the national team, including during a 5-2 loss to Belgium. His potential role would have been as a backup striker, competing with players like Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright, with Folarin Balogun expected to start.
Pochettino recently mentioned that up to 40 players are in contention for the 26-man roster, emphasizing the difficulty of the selection process. “It is going to be painful because that process… is going to be difficult to pick only 26 from 35, 40,” he said. “Who will be there is going to be happy, who is not on the roster is going to be sad.”
He added, “This was the end of our cycle… for preparation for the World Cup. I think this is the end because the next roster is going to be the roster that is going to be involved. I think it’s too many things that we need to assess and to see in the next few weeks.”

Since taking over in August 2024, Pochettino has experimented with his lineup, making six changes for last week’s loss against Portugal in Atlanta, just four days after a 5-2 defeat to Belgium. The former Tottenham and Chelsea coach now faces the daunting task of narrowing down a large pool of players to just 26 for the World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12.
Pochettino also indicated that he has not yet spoken to his players about the selection dilemma. “I think now they know that it’s going to be a competition,” he said. “They know that we are going to see every single week, every single game, and we are going to assess one year and a half or more, and we are going to make the decision.”
