Val Kilmer’s Posthumous Final Role: AI Brings Hollywood Icon Back to the Screen
The world of cinema is abuzz with the unprecedented return of Val Kilmer, the celebrated Hollywood actor, who is set to grace the silver screen once more in a final, posthumous role. This remarkable feat is made possible through the innovative application of Artificial Intelligence, which has been employed to bring Kilmer back to life for the upcoming film, As Deep As The Grave.
Kilmer, who tragically passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 65 after a courageous battle with throat cancer, had already committed to this final project before his health declined to a point where filming was impossible. The filmmakers, in collaboration with Kilmer’s estate, have chosen to utilise AI technology to portray the actor as Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and a Native American spiritualist.

The decision to proceed with an AI recreation of the late actor has been met with a spectrum of reactions. However, it’s crucial to note that this ambitious undertaking has the full blessing of Val Kilmer’s estate and his two children, Mercedes and Jack. They have been instrumental in providing invaluable resources, including younger images and footage from Kilmer’s final years, which have been crucial for the AI rendering process.
Writer and director Coerte Voorhees shared his perspective on the project with Variety, highlighting the deep commitment of Kilmer’s family. “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” Voorhees explained. “He really thought it was important story that he wanted his name on. It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay let’s do this. Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”
Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes, echoed this sentiment, emphasising her father’s forward-thinking approach to technology. “He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling,” she stated. “This spirit is something that we are all honouring within this specific film, of which he was an integral part.”
The film As Deep As The Grave also features a notable cast, including Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin, all of whom will share the screen with the AI-generated likeness of Val Kilmer.
Fan Reactions and the Precedent Set by “Top Gun: Maverick”
While the filmmakers and Kilmer’s family are united in their vision, the public’s response has been more divided. Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), have seen a flurry of comments expressing concern and even disdain regarding the use of AI to resurrect deceased actors.
One user voiced their strong opposition, stating: “I do not care how much permission they had to do this, no one should be allowed to do this. It should be illegal to resurrect the visage of dead people with genAI imo.” Another commenter expressed a similar sentiment: “no amount of moral dressing is going to change how sick and greedy this is. the family should be ashamed tbh.”
This controversy, however, is not the first time AI has played a significant role in Val Kilmer’s recent cinematic legacy. Fans were deeply moved by his poignant return as Lieutenant Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky in the blockbuster sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Following the news of his passing, scenes from this film, where Kilmer made a powerful comeback alongside Tom Cruise, resurfaced online, eliciting tears from many viewers.
Kilmer, who famously portrayed Iceman in the original 1986 Top Gun, had his vocal cords permanently damaged by a tracheotomy in 2014, a consequence of his battle with throat cancer. For Top Gun: Maverick, released in 2022, AI technology was ingeniously employed to regenerate his voice, allowing his character to speak audibly.

In the film, Iceman, now promoted to Admiral, communicates with Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) through typed messages on a screen. The AI-generated voice brought his words to life, delivering an emotional exchange where Iceman advised Maverick to “let go” of the past. This scene, followed by Maverick attending his friend’s funeral, proved to be incredibly moving for audiences, and these moments have been revisited with renewed poignancy in light of Kilmer’s death.
Understanding Val Kilmer’s Final Battle and Health Details
The iconic actor, renowned for his versatile roles in films like Top Gun and Batman, passed away from pneumonia on April 1, 2025. A death certificate obtained by TMZ confirmed the cause of death, with his daughter having previously revealed that a lung infection was the ultimate culprit.
The Los Angeles County Department of Health death certificate listed the underlying causes as ‘acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue.’ Squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer that develops in the thin, flat cells lining the throat, including the larynx and pharynx, was a disease Kilmer had publicly battled 11 years prior.

Kilmer underwent emergency tracheotomies following his initial diagnosis, which significantly impacted his ability to speak. While he had announced being cancer-free for four years in 2020, the death certificate confirms that the disease had unfortunately recurred. Additional contributing factors noted on the certificate include malnutrition and a ‘tracheocutaneous fistula,’ an abnormal opening between the trachea and the skin, often a complication following the removal of a tracheostomy tube.
Val Kilmer’s enduring legacy, now further amplified by the groundbreaking use of AI in his final performance, ensures that his presence in cinema will continue to resonate with audiences for generations to come.
