Van Dijk: Szoboszlai Ready for Captaincy Leap

Szoboszlai Tipped for Future Liverpool Captaincy by Van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk, the current Liverpool captain, has expressed his strong belief that Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai possesses all the necessary attributes to eventually succeed him in the leadership role at Anfield. Van Dijk highlighted Szoboszlai’s consistent performances and his exemplary conduct on the field throughout what has been a challenging, albeit at times inconsistent, season for the Reds.

Szoboszlai has emerged as one of Liverpool’s most reliable performers this term. Despite being frequently asked to adapt to various positions, most notably filling in at right-back, the 25-year-old has consistently delivered. His impact has not gone unnoticed, with teammate Mohamed Salah recently describing him as “one of the best players in the world right now.” This season, Szoboszlai has reached double figures for goals, a significant milestone that surpasses his previous best return for the club. He is nearing his career-high of 12 goals scored for RB Salzburg in the 2019-20 season, but his influence extends far beyond just goalscoring. He has been a central figure in driving the team forward.

The question of Liverpool’s future captaincy is a pertinent one. Current vice-captain Andy Robertson, who will turn 32 next month, is approaching the end of his contract in the summer, and his long-term future at the club remains uncertain.

Van Dijk, when discussing the potential for Szoboszlai to inherit the captain’s armband, deferred ultimate decision-making to the manager. However, he was unequivocal in his praise for the Hungarian. “Obviously, he has been very good,” Van Dijk stated. “He is a player who I think can still take the next step in terms of being a leader for this team.”

Van Dijk elaborated on what he believes constitutes leadership, emphasising the importance of leading by example, a quality Szoboszlai has demonstrated this season. “It starts by leading by example, and that’s something he has done so far this season,” he remarked. “But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made, and that’s a good thing in my opinion. So, hopefully, he will be very important for the years to come at Liverpool.”

Discussions are reportedly underway regarding a contract extension for Szoboszlai. The midfielder is currently operating under the terms of his initial deal, signed following his £60 million transfer in the summer of 2023. His impressive performances have already attracted the attention of clubs like Real Madrid. However, Szoboszlai’s agent, Matyas Esterhazy, has recently indicated that their focus remains firmly on Liverpool, stating that they are “not looking outside or elsewhere.”

Endo’s Injury Blow and Squad Resilience

Liverpool is also awaiting a definitive diagnosis on a foot injury sustained by midfielder Wataru Endo. Endo, like Szoboszlai, has also been deployed at right-back due to ongoing squad issues in that position.

While Endo has been a more peripheral figure this season, making 12 appearances, predominantly as a substitute, Van Dijk stressed that his importance to the squad should not be underestimated. The Dutch defender acknowledged the significance of Endo’s absence.

“It’s not great. He is such an important and respected member of the team. He’s one of the leaders, and he always leads by example as well,” Van Dijk added. “On the pitch, he gives everything. It’s a big blow, but we have to deal with it, and we will. Hopefully, it’s not going to take too long, but it looks like it will be a while.”

Van Dijk concluded by reaffirming the squad’s commitment to supporting Endo during his recovery. “But we are here for him. We are going to be together with him all the way and support him with everything he needs.” The team’s ability to navigate these challenges and maintain its competitive edge will be a testament to its collective strength and the leadership qualities emerging within the squad.
