Vance Travels to Hungary to Back Orbán’s Vision

US Vice President JD Vance’s Visit to Hungary

US Vice President JD Vance made a trip to Hungary on Monday night, aiming to express President Donald Trump’s backing for his close ally, nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This visit comes ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, which are expected to be highly competitive.

Vance is scheduled to meet with Orbán on Tuesday morning and will then deliver a speech at the “Hungarian-American Friendship Day” rally held at the MTK Sports Park. During his departure from Andrews Air Force Base, outside Washington, Vance shared insights about the discussions he anticipates having with Orbán. He mentioned that topics such as the US-Hungary relationship, Europe, and Ukraine would likely be central to their conversation.

Trump has consistently shown support for Orbán throughout his second term. The US President has publicly stated, “I support his upcoming election; in fact, I am fully behind him.” This endorsement underscores the strong political ties between the two leaders.

Orbán’s campaign strategy focuses heavily on foreign policy, where he plays a crucial role in maintaining positive relations with both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. His approach to international affairs has been a key factor in shaping Hungary’s diplomatic stance.

Despite this, recent polls conducted by independent institutes suggest that the Tisza party, led by pro-European conservative Péter Magyar, may achieve a significant victory. In just two years, Magyar has successfully established an opposition movement capable of challenging the long-standing dominance of Orbán, who has transformed Hungary into a model of illiberal democracy.

On the other hand, pro-government institutions predict a win for Orbán’s Fidesz-KDNP coalition. This contrast in predictions highlights the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming elections.

Since returning to power, the Trump administration has taken a different approach compared to previous US administrations regarding foreign elections. Instead of maintaining a traditional level of restraint, it now openly supports leaders who align with its ideological and diplomatic priorities.

Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, visited Budapest in mid-February to express his support for Orbán. During a joint press conference with Orbán, Rubio emphasized the importance of their partnership. He stated, “I can say to you with confidence that President Trump is deeply committed to your success, because your success is our success.”

Orbán shares several commonalities with the Trump administration, particularly on anti-migrant policies. These policies became prominent during the refugee crisis in Hungary a decade ago. Orbán has also visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on multiple occasions, further strengthening their personal and political bond.
