Wanindu Hasaranga out of IPL 2026; Lucknow Super Giants seek overseas spin cover

The Lucknow Super Giants’ Search for a New Player

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have acknowledged that Wanindu Hasaranga will not be available for the IPL 2026 season. His absence has been apparent for several weeks, and the team has started looking for a new player to fill his position. This decision came after extensive evaluations of his ability to play.

During LSG’s match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Tom Moody, the cricket director, confirmed this information. The team needed immediate reinforcement as the tournament moved into its more active phases.

Hasaranga suffered a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s first match at the T20 World Cup earlier this year and has not played professional cricket since then. He has not met the fitness standards set by Sri Lanka Cricket, which are required to obtain his No Objection Certificate (NOC) for IPL participation.

Potential Replacement: George Linde

According to an ESPNcricinfo report, the main candidate to replace Hasaranga is South Africa all-rounder George Linde. Although Linde has not yet participated in the IPL, he has experience in various T20 leagues, including the SA20, The Hundred, Major League Cricket, and the PSL.

Linde is an intelligent all-rounder who recently played for South Africa in the T20 World Cup. He has taken 218 wickets in over 250 T20 matches. He bats at the lower order, a role that Hasaranga was responsible for. However, LSG already has Shahbaz Ahmed, who can perform similar duties. The playing XI includes M Siddharth, who provides strong left-arm spinning abilities, while Linde could serve as the overseas alternative to Shahbaz.

Despite his recent performances not being impressive, with only one wicket in four matches during the New Zealand T20 series, LSG is evaluating his overall all-round performance rather than just his current statistics.

Hasaranga’s Injury History

Hasaranga has undergone two significant surgical procedures since 2023 due to severe hamstring issues. His injuries during the LPL 2023 caused a Grade 3 muscle tear, which kept him out of the ODI World Cup 2023 and Asia Cup 2023.

After treatment for his recurring hamstring problem, he had his second surgery before the T20 World Cup 2026 in January 2026, following a consultation with a Singaporean expert. In early 2024, Hasaranga also experienced ongoing heel discomfort in his left foot alongside his hamstring injuries.

Previous Replacement Options

Earlier reports indicated that LSG had shortlisted four replacement options for Hasaranga. Interestingly, Linde was not among them. The list included Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi, according to reports.

Team Performance Despite Absences

Despite Hasaranga’s absence, LSG has managed to handle the situation better than expected. The bowling unit has become their strongest asset due to consistent performances. Mohammed Shami has reached an exceptional level of performance, producing significant effects. Prince Yadav has performed so well during the season that he has forced Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav to sit on the bench.

Avesh Khan has shown decent performance, while Anrich Nortje continues to search for his place in the team. Shahbaz Ahmed has received limited chances to play because Digvesh Rathi and M Siddharth have taken control of the spin department. The team remains in good shape despite Mohsin Khan facing minor issues with stiffness.
