Wanwue Tarpeh: A Stepping Stone, Not an Ending, on Australian Idol
At just 21 years old, Wanwue Tarpeh’s journey on Australian Idol may have concluded, but the vibrant performer isn’t dwelling on the elimination. Instead, she’s embracing the experience as a powerful launchpad for what she believes is an even greater future in the music industry. While the sting of leaving the competition is undeniable, Wanwue is quick to highlight the invaluable opportunities and connections she forged during her time on the show.
“No one wants to be out of the competition, but I’m actually doing extremely well, surprisingly,” Wanwue shared, reflecting on her time on the popular reality TV series. “I’m just reminiscing about all the great times I had and the opportunities that this experience gave me, from working with industry professionals to performing regularly and absolutely loving it. I just had the best time.”
This sentiment was echoed by her recent show-stopping performance of host Ricki-Lee Coulter’s hit, “Can’t Touch This.” Wanwue delivered a commanding rendition, complete with energetic backup dancers and a self-penned rap that had both the judges and the Australian audience on their feet. She described the moment as one of the most significant honours of her burgeoning career. Despite delivering arguably her best performance to date, it wasn’t enough to secure the most votes, leading to her elimination.
“When I heard I was in the bottom two, I was not really surprised. It was a shock, but I kind of had a gut feeling,” she admitted candidly. “But everything has to come to an end. When one door closes, another opens, and I know what is mine will find me. So I believe my journey was meant to end here, and that there’s something coming up for me, and this had to close for it to open up. And I’m just excited to see what it is.”
Wanwue’s mature perspective on her Idol experience belies her young age. Her grounded approach stems from a conscious effort to step back and analyse the true significance of her time on the show, looking beyond the immediate competition to its long-term impact.
“I feel really blessed from the experience on the show because I know not everyone has a good time on reality TV, but my time was amazing,” Wanwue stated.
Navigating the Reality TV Landscape
One of the most significant hurdles for Wanwue was a mental shift. She had to grapple with the understanding that reality television, while an incredible platform, doesn’t solely define an artist’s career or accurately represent the broader music industry.
“I had to come to terms with the idea that reality TV doesn’t define you, and it’s not a true reflection of the industry; it’s just a stepping stone,” she explained. “This show is an incredible platform, but my challenge was getting out of my head and allowing myself to fully embrace the experience, instead of constantly worrying about going home. Once I did that, I was so much happier.”
The Road Ahead: Beyond the Idol Stage
With her Australian Idol chapter closed, Wanwue is now laser-focused on the next phase of her career. Her immediate plans involve continuing her studies, actively pursuing performance opportunities, and seeking representation from a dedicated agent or manager.
“This is just the jumping-off point,” she asserted with conviction. “I don’t see it as the end of my music career – I see it as the beginning.”
