Warriors Surge into Round Four with High Hopes, Tigers Focus on Their Game
The Wests Tigers are bracing for a formidable challenge as they prepare to face a New Zealand Warriors outfit riding a wave of confidence. The Warriors are on the cusp of a historic start to their National Rugby League (NRL) season, aiming for their best opening month in the club’s 32-year history.
Entering their round-four clash at a sold-out Mount Smart Stadium this Friday night, the Warriors boast an unblemished record of three wins from their opening three games. Their strong performance has seen them top the ladder and score more points than any other team in the competition thus far. Key to their success have been standout performances from halfback Tanah Boyd and middle forward Jackson Ford, both of whom are enjoying career-best form.

Adding further depth and experience to the Warriors’ lineup, Mitch Barnett has made a successful return from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, contributing a try assist in their recent victory over Newcastle. Talented playmaker Luke Metcalf is also back in action after his own ACL lay-off, set to partner Boyd in the halves this week.
Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall acknowledged the Warriors’ impressive run. “The Warriors have been playing some really good footy, obviously three from three to start the season, and probably high on confidence,” Marshall commented.
A victory on Friday would not only extend the Warriors’ winning streak but also mark only the second time in their history they have secured four consecutive wins to commence a season. The previous instance, in 2018, saw them break a seven-year finals drought, with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck achieving Dally M Medalist status and David Fusitu’a finishing as the league’s top tryscorer. Should the Warriors triumph this weekend, their current start would surpass the 2018 season on points differential, cementing it as their best opening month on record.
Despite the Warriors’ impressive form and the potential for a historic milestone, Marshall emphasised that the Tigers’ focus remains squarely on their own performance. “For us, it’s not about the Warriors,” he stated. “I will talk to the team about making sure we do the things we need to do and play our style and play our game.”
The Tigers will be without their dynamic five-eighth, Jarome Luai, who is expected to miss a month of action due to a knee injury. Marshall expressed his confidence in Jock Madden, who will step into the crucial playmaking role. Madden, who last featured in first grade with the Brisbane Broncos in July 2024, brings his own set of strengths to the team.
“Madden has got some really big strengths of his own that we’re looking forward to seeing him put out there,” Marshall said. He also highlighted the resilience of rugby league teams in the face of adversity. “Everyone has injuries, Newcastle are going through a similar thing at the moment. All you’ve got to do is put systems in place that no matter who comes in, everyone knows their job and the way you want to play.”
This approach underscores the Tigers’ commitment to their game plan, regardless of the opposition’s current form or any individual player absences. The team will be looking to implement their strategies effectively and challenge the high-flying Warriors at Mount Smart Stadium.
Key Matchup Considerations:
- Warriors’ Offensive Powerhouse: With a potent attack and key players in top form, the Warriors will be a significant threat to the Tigers’ defence.
- Tigers’ Midfield Battle: The performance of Jock Madden in the absence of Jarome Luai will be crucial for the Tigers’ ability to control territory and create scoring opportunities.
- Defensive Resilience: Both teams will need to demonstrate strong defensive structures to contain the opposition’s attacking threats.
- Set Completion: A high rate of set completion will be vital for both sides to build pressure and minimise opportunities for their opponents.

As the NRL season continues to unfold, this clash promises to be an intriguing contest between a surging Warriors side aiming for history and a Wests Tigers team determined to stick to their own game plan and cause an upset. The atmosphere at Mount Smart Stadium is expected to be electric, with the home crowd eager to witness their team potentially achieve a significant club milestone. The Tigers, however, will be looking to spoil the party and secure valuable competition points.
