“We played fantastic footy”: Fagan thrilled after star performance

A Strong Start for the Lions

Chris Fagan’s Easter weekend began on a high note as his Lions team delivered a commanding performance against a weakened Magpies side in their traditional Easter Thursday match. The Magpies were missing several key players, including their current captain Darcy Moore, former captain Scott Pendlebury, and potential future captain Nick Daicos.

The Lions capitalized on this opportunity, showcasing their dominance throughout the game. Their strong midfield performance was a significant factor, with the Lions winning clearances by 18 and contested possessions by 39. Coach Fagan praised the team’s balanced performance, highlighting that every line contributed to the victory.

“It was a really even team performance,” Fagan said. “I thought we played fantastic footy, and it felt like we could’ve won by a little more. I don’t mean to sound greedy but we did play exceptionally well in all facets, whether it be contest, team defence, or our offence was outstanding.”

Fagan noted that Collingwood had been performing well defensively in the first three games of the season, but the Lions’ approach made it difficult for the opposition to defend effectively.

Defensive Challenges and Midfield Strategy

Despite the Lions’ strong performance, their defense is currently under pressure due to the suspension of co-captain Harris Andrews and the injury absence of veteran Darcy Gardiner. Fagan emphasized the importance of midfield dominance to alleviate pressure on the makeshift defense.

“I felt like if we could get on top in the midfield and get good supply to our forward line that would be a bonus because the area of the ground that’s affected for us at the moment is our defence, in terms of personnel, or big name personnel,” he said.

Fagan commended the efforts of the players in the defensive end, particularly Darragh Joyce, Ty Gallop, and Ryan Lester, who performed exceptionally well. He also praised the small defenders for their contributions.

New Recruits Shine

The Lions’ off-season recruits made a significant impact in the game. Sam Draper and Oscar Allen provided aerial prowess, while Logan Morris added to the team’s strength. Draper’s performance at center bounce was particularly impressive, contributing to the team’s scoring opportunities.

“We did exceptionally well at centre bounce – we kicked a big score from centre bounce. I thought (Sam) Draper and (Darcy) Fort in the ruck gave us lots of good looks as well,” Fagan said.

Will Ashcroft’s Breakthrough

Will Ashcroft, a player with two Norm Smith Medals, showed signs of becoming a consistent top-level contributor. After a slow start to the season, Ashcroft delivered a standout performance in the final quarter of the previous week, which carried over into the game against the Pies.

With 36 disposals, a likely Goal of the Year contender, 11 score involvements, six clearances, and 15 contested possessions, Ashcroft’s impact was undeniable. Fagan expressed confidence in Ashcroft’s potential to become a leader on the field.

“I think he knows how good he can become,” Fagan said. “That last quarter last week gave him a lot of confidence and we’ve all got a lot of faith in him, and he knows it. Hopefully he can become one of those players that we look to now to lead us out on the field and get us going.”

Player Availability Updates

Fagan concluded his press conference with updates on player availability. Harris Andrews is expected to return next week, along with Noah Answerth. Hugh McCluggage has shown improvement, but no risks will be taken with the midfielder.

The Lions are set to face North Melbourne in the Barossa next Saturday.
