South Carolina Mother Found Safe After Disappearing en Route Home from Church Meeting
A perplexing case that gripped a South Carolina community has reached a conclusion, with a 37-year-old mother, Leigh McAlister, being located in Atlanta, Georgia, after she went missing following a church meeting. McAlister, a resident of Lexington, near Columbia, had travelled to Atlanta on February 13th. She was reported missing by her husband, Rob, on February 14th, when she failed to return home as scheduled.
The initial report indicated that McAlister had travelled to Atlanta for a church gathering. Her husband stated that she was expected back on February 14th. However, friends and family circulated a missing person’s poster, which suggested she might be delaying her return by an additional day for reasons that were not initially clear. The poster described McAlister as 5’10” with brown eyes and brown hair.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the investigation, capturing McAlister’s movements in Atlanta. On February 14th, she was seen passing by a Publix supermarket located at Buckhead Landing. This sighting provided investigators with a geographical marker and a timeline of her presence in the city.
The mystery deepened when McAlister’s vehicle, an SUV, was discovered on February 16th. Authorities located the car in close proximity to the Atlanta Braves’ stadium, a location approximately ten miles from where she was last seen on surveillance footage near the supermarket. The discovery of her car raised further questions, particularly due to its contents.
Inside the SUV, investigators found both Leigh McAlister’s mobile phone and her wallet. This finding immediately intensified concerns for her welfare, as it raised questions about how she had managed to travel or sustain herself without these essential personal items. Authorities have not yet provided any explanation as to why she left her phone and wallet behind, nor have they detailed the circumstances of her travel after leaving her vehicle.

McAlister’s husband, Rob, expressed his bewilderment and distress over the situation. Speaking to WLTX-TV Columbia on Monday, he described the entire incident as being completely out of character for his wife. He emphasised that this was not behaviour he had ever seen from her before. Driven by concern, Rob McAlister had himself travelled to Atlanta in an effort to locate his wife.
The disappearance had also taken a significant toll on their four-year-old son, who had become increasingly confused and distressed by his mother’s absence. The family’s ordeal highlighted the emotional impact of such unexplained events on young children.
Following the report of her disappearance, extensive efforts were made to locate Leigh McAlister. The Atlanta Police Department and the Cobb County Police Department were involved in the search. Details surrounding her precise location and condition upon being found by Atlanta police at a local hospital have not been extensively released, with authorities stating only that she was located. The circumstances that led to her leaving her home, her journey to Atlanta, and the events that transpired over the weekend remain a subject of ongoing inquiry. The family has expressed relief at her safe return but is seeking answers regarding the unusual nature of her disappearance.
