Bulldogs Face Uncertainty After Star Midfielder’s Injury
The Western Bulldogs are facing a difficult week as their star midfielder, Ed Richards, is feared to have suffered a serious ankle injury during a 42-point loss to Hawthorn. The match, which took place at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night, saw the Hawks deliver the first defeat of the season to the Dogs with a resounding victory of 14.14 (98) to 7.14 (56).
Richards, known for his brilliance on the field, was forced to leave the game in agony after his right ankle and foot twisted awkwardly late in the Gather Round encounter. The Bulldogs’ coach, Luke Beveridge, confirmed that the extent of the injury is still unknown.
“We don’t know the extent of it yet,” Beveridge said. “We will have a look at it through the imaging and then we will get back to you. We’re just hoping it’s not too bad, but I can’t give you anything until the medical staff give us something definitive.”
The loss has placed the Bulldogs alongside Sydney, Fremantle, and the Hawks with four wins and one loss, keeping them ahead of the rest of the competition. Meanwhile, Hawthorn’s performance was highlighted by their co-captain Jai Newcombe, who delivered a complete midfield game with 28 disposals, 14 clearances, and a goal. His teammate James Sicily and Josh Battle both recorded 13 marks in defense, while Jack Ginnivan stood out with 28 touches and a classy goal.
Karl Amon, Jarman Impey, and Blake Hardwick were also prominent with 24, 26, and 25 possessions respectively. Mitch Lewis had an impressive three-goal performance with 10 marks, and veteran Jack Gunston and Dylan Moore added threats with three and two goals each. However, fellow forward Mabior Chol suffered a hamstring injury.

Hawthorn’s coach, Sam Mitchell, praised the team’s intensity: “We played with a level of intensity that is required to beat really good sides.” The Bulldogs struggled to assert their usual midfield control, with Newcombe dominating stoppage clearances 34-16. Marcus Bontempelli, Ryley Sanders, and Richards were among the key players, with Richards contributing 22 disposals and seven tackles before being injured.
Sam Darcy was a standout for the Bulldogs, kicking two goals in the first quarter. Hawthorn started strongly, with Lewis scoring two of four goals to take a nine-point lead at quarter-time. The Hawks maintained their dominance in the second term, holding the Dogs goalless and extending their lead to 28 points at halftime.

The Bulldogs managed to reduce their deficit in the third quarter when Joel Freijah scored an open goal. However, the Hawks quickly regained control, scoring three goals in under four minutes. Nick Watson kicked one and set up another, while Ginnivan’s left-foot snap helped create a 44-point lead.
Despite the overwhelming deficit, the Bulldogs found some hope in their young players. Josh Dolan, Harvey Gallagher, and Cooper Hynes all scored goals in a rapid response. However, the Hawks closed out the game with three consecutive goals, and Richards was forced to leave the field injured.
