A Historic Win for the Wests Tigers
The atmosphere at Campbelltown Sports Stadium was electric as 15,221 fans stood and applauded the Wests Tigers during half-time. This moment of celebration was just a glimpse of what the team achieved in their recent victory over the Newcastle Knights. The Tigers delivered a stunning performance, securing a 42-22 win that placed them equal first on the NRL premiership ladder alongside Penrith.
This win marked a significant milestone for the Tigers, as it was their first three-game winning streak in eight years. Back then, coach Benji Marshall was playing as the five-eighth. Additionally, this victory was the club’s first win at Campbelltown in over 600 days, highlighting a long-awaited return to form.
Star Performers Shine
Sunia Turuva was the standout performer of the match, scoring a hat-trick of tries. Jahream Bula also contributed with a double, and his efforts were frequently praised by Phil Gould, the Bulldogs general manager, who was working in the commentary box for Channel Nine.
One of the most heartwarming stories of the game was Patrick Herbert, a late call-up to start in the centres. It was his first NRL game since 2022. Herbert had been driving an excavator in Wollongong late last year when Marshall reached out to him about a potential comeback. The 29-year-old former Titans player had initially planned to move to the Super League in 2023, but injuries to his knee and Achilles ended those plans.
Herbert played a crucial role in the team’s success, setting up Turuva’s second try and scoring one himself when Bula created space for him. His ability to dummie past the last line of Newcastle’s defense showcased his talent and determination.
Coach’s Mixed Feelings
Newcastle coach Justin Holbrook acknowledged the Tigers’ strength, stating, “We gave them a lot of ball, and soft penalties, they’re a good footy side, especially in attack; we made it way too hard on ourselves – we weren’t good enough.”
The Tigers’ performance was impressive, with a team that plays with flair, resilience, and growing confidence each week. Players like Adam Doueihi, Terrell May, and Api Koroisau have been instrumental in the team’s success. Royce Hunt has also brought energy to the squad whenever he comes off the bench.
Looking ahead, the Tigers are set to welcome back Jarome Luai and possibly Taylan May from injury for their next match against the Broncos.
A New Era of Excitement
In previous visits, Brisbane fans showed appreciation for players like Adam Reynolds and Reece Walsh. Now, the local supporters are equally excited and proud of their own team’s potential.
Coach Benji Marshall expressed satisfaction with the win but was disappointed with the late tries conceded by his team. “The two points is what you come for, and to give our fans [the chance] to go to work on a Monday, with something to celebrate, which is really important to us,” Marshall said.
He added, “I’m happy in that respect, but unhappy at the same time. We’ve worked so hard to change our standards around what’s acceptable. The last 15 minutes was unacceptable.”
Challenges Faced by the Knights
Newcastle entered the match in strong form, but their injury list was extensive. Players like Bradman Best, Kalyn Ponga, Dylan Brown, and Tyson Frizell were all sidelined. Their chances of winning were further complicated when they lost the toss, allowing Koroisau to choose to run with the wind in the first half.
The Tigers executed their game plan effectively, focusing on attacking down their right side and targeting the Knights’ left edge. Turuva had the opportunity to score even more tries, while Dominic Young managed to score the Knights’ only first-half try after evading defenders.
Young also denied Heamasi Makasini a try by making a tackle with the back of his hand, showcasing the tight contest throughout the game.
Despite the challenges, the weight of possession made any comeback difficult for the Knights, even with the wind at their backs. They will need to regroup for their next match against the Roosters, where Dylan Brown may be available.
