Masters Tournament 2025: A Battle for the Green Jacket
The 90th edition of the Masters Tournament is set to take place at Augusta National Golf Club, and one of the most anticipated participants is Rory McIlroy. As the defending champion and world number two, McIlroy will be looking to add another green jacket to his collection. However, the Northern Irishman has faced some challenges recently, including a back injury that forced him to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational. His recent performance at the Players Championship was also underwhelming, with a joint 48th-place finish.
Despite these setbacks, McIlroy remains a formidable contender. He has expressed hope that returning to Augusta will help him regain his form, but the pressure of the occasion could prove challenging. The tournament’s history shows that even the best players can struggle under the weight of expectations.
Scottie Scheffler: Consistency is Key
Scottie Scheffler, known as “Mr. Consistent,” is another player to watch. The world number one has started the season strongly, with a win, a third, and a fourth in his first three events. However, he has struggled with poor first rounds in his last two tournaments. Despite this, Scheffler’s experience at Augusta should not be overlooked. He has finished in the top four in his last four appearances at the Masters, including a win in 2022. His ability to perform under pressure makes him a serious threat.
Bryson DeChambeau: Rising Star
Bryson DeChambeau, one of the in-form LIV Golfers, has been making waves with back-to-back wins in Singapore and South Africa. The American, who finished sixth in the 2024 Masters, had a strong showing in the final round of last year’s tournament, finishing in the last group with McIlroy. Although he eventually dropped to joint fifth, his game appears to be on an upward trajectory. With a solid track record at Augusta, DeChambeau is definitely a player to keep an eye on.
Jon Rahm: A Strong Contender
Jon Rahm, the other LIV Golfer, is also in the mix. While he failed to convert 54-hole leads in Saudi Arabia and Adelaide, he has shown resilience by winning in Hong Kong and coming close in South Africa, where he lost a play-off to DeChambeau. Rahm has three top-10s in his last five major starts and has a win and four top-10s in nine Augusta outings. His consistency and experience make him a strong contender.
Ludvig Aberg: A Promising Talent
Ludvig Aberg, a 26-year-old Swede, has saved some of his best performances for the Masters. He finished as a runner-up in his 2024 debut and placed seventh in the previous year, jointly holding the final-round lead late on Sunday. Recent performances, including two top-fives in his last two events, suggest that Aberg is finding his form just in time for the tournament. His potential makes him a player to watch closely.
Matt Fitzpatrick: A Player on the Rise
Matt Fitzpatrick, Aberg’s Ryder Cup team-mate, is arguably the player with the best trajectory. He entered last year’s Masters outside the world’s top 70 but returns in a career-high fifth position after two wins and nine other top-10s in his last 19 starts. Although he agonizingly lost the Players at the 72nd hole, he bounced back to win the Valspar Championship the following week. Fitzpatrick has not missed a Masters cut since his debut 12 years ago, and if he can find some form with the putter, the 2022 US Open champion is in with a shout.
Xander Schauffele: A Return to Form
Xander Schauffele, who won two majors in 2024, struggled last year due to an early-season injury. However, he has returned to something close to his best form this year. His ability to find a hot streak and shoot low is evident from rounds of 65 in five of his seven events this year. With five top-10s in eight appearances, Schauffele knows how to handle the course and is a strong contender.
