Rory McIlroy’s Record-Breaking Start at the Masters
Rory McIlroy’s remarkable performance at the Masters has sparked discussions among fans about the future of one of the tournament’s most iconic traditions if he manages to win again. The Masters is known for its unique customs, and one of the most anticipated moments is when the previous year’s champion hands over the green jacket to the new winner. This tradition has been a highlight of the event for decades, adding a layer of history and continuity to the competition.
Last year, Scottie Scheffler was the one who passed on the green jacket to McIlroy after the Northern Irish golfer finally claimed his first major title, completing the career Grand Slam. This moment was significant not only for McIlroy but also for the golfing world, as it marked a major milestone in his career.
McIlroy’s performance in the second round on Friday has been nothing short of impressive. He is currently at 12-under-par, leading the field by six strokes over Sam Burns and Patrick Reed. If he continues this form and secures victory, he would become just the fourth player in history to win the Masters in consecutive years. This achievement would place him among some of the greatest names in golf history.
Jack Nicklaus was the first to accomplish this feat back in 1966, and he famously put the green jacket on himself. Since then, a new tradition has been established, where the chairman of Augusta National Golf Club presents the jacket to the winner. This happened when Nick Faldo won in 1990 and when Tiger Woods claimed victory in 2002. In both cases, the jackets were presented by the club’s chairman, with Hord Hardin giving Faldo his and William Johnson placing the jacket around Woods’ shoulders.
If McIlroy wins again, he will receive his green jacket from current Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley. Ridley has held this position since 2017 and is the seventh chairman in the club’s history. His role in presenting the jacket adds another layer of significance to McIlroy’s potential success.
In his pursuit of back-to-back green jackets, McIlroy has expressed that he feels like he is “playing with house money.” After his second round, he admitted that he didn’t expect to be six strokes ahead going into the weekend. McIlroy has always had a deep appreciation for the Masters and the course, even during times when he felt it wasn’t in his favor.

“I’ve always loved this tournament, this golf course, even when I felt like it didn’t love me back,” McIlroy said. “It’s such a pleasure to be here, it’s a unique tournament, there is nothing else like this that we play. I so desperately wanted to win here so I could come back each and every year.”
McIlroy has made it clear that he plans to maintain his aggressive approach rather than focusing on protecting his lead. He has acknowledged that his mindset on the course has evolved over the years. “Over the years [at] this golf course, my mindset hasn’t been keep swinging,” he admitted. “It’s been guided, tentative. I think the experience I’ve accrued over the years and obviously with what happened last year, it makes it a bit easier out there to keep swinging.”

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on McIlroy to see if he can continue his impressive form and add another chapter to the rich history of the Masters. Whether or not he manages to win, his journey so far has already made an impact on the golfing world and the fans who follow the sport closely.
