A New Approach to Hiring
An Australian Gen Z boss who gained attention for offering staff perks like shopping sprees at Mecca and free fuel vouchers has now shared an unusual method for hiring dozens of new employees. The roles come with salaries up to $300,000 a year, and candidates will have just 60 seconds to prove themselves, according to the CEO.
Kyle Hunt, 27, is the CEO of Health Care Providers Association (HCPA), a Melbourne-based healthcare consulting firm. He is currently looking to fill 35 positions in sales, technology, healthcare, and human resources. The company has received over 6,000 résumés for these roles, which his team finds challenging to process.
“A lot of people want a role here, and I want to hire a lot of people,” Hunt said in an interview. “We’re trying something a bit unique and wild.”
The 60-Second Pitch
Candidates will arrive with their résumés and participate in a “walk-in interview” where they are given 60 seconds to pitch themselves. This approach is likened to a mix of speed dating and an episode of Shark Tank.
“Everyone gets heard rather than their resume being missed. If we love them, we’ll interview them then and there and hire them if they’re the right fit,” Hunt explained.
“This way, in a day, we could probably knock out a lot of these roles and people get the opportunity to even come in and pitch us.”
A Focus on Personality
Hunt believes that a CV is only a small part of who someone is. He hopes that allowing people to express who they are face-to-face will be more valuable.
“Think of it like an in-real-life résumé where it’s them, not just some words on the paper,” Hunt said.
This initiative reflects his own unconventional path to success. Hunt was raised in foster care and lived with more than 30 families by the age of 16. He started HCPA when he was just 19 and had no prior experience in the corporate world. Today, the company has around 130 employees.
Competitive Salaries and Career Growth
The jobs offer competitive salaries, with some roles paying up to $300,000 a year. Hunt emphasized that career progression is another key draw for potential employees.
“People are getting management positions in months rather than years. People are going to director positions in a year rather than over a decade,” he said.
“Being able to bring people along a very fast-paced mission is what people want. Rather than gifts here and there, it’s actually a bit of purpose and extreme career progression.”
Salaries vary depending on the role. For sales teams, the average is between $150,000 and $200,000. In tech, the range is between $160,000 and $300,000 per role, while HR managers can expect between $120,000 and $160,000, depending on their skill set.
A Positive Response
Hunt posted a video on social media about the initiative, saying people could essentially “walk in and get hired.” The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with hundreds of views and comments from Australians eager to land a job.
“Love this,” one person wrote.
“This is awesome,” another said.
“Bring back the olden days walk-in interview,” a third wrote.
“This is perfect. This is how it used to be! The world is healing,” another joked.
Changing Trends in Hiring
This approach comes at a time when other Australian companies are using AI as part of their hiring process. Retailers like Bunnings and Woolworths are among those using it in early stages of the application process.
Other companies are taking a different route, introducing 72-hour job interviews, where applicants come in for three or even five days to test their suitability for roles.
Hunt said he will be looking for two key things in people’s 60-second pitches: whether they align with the company’s values and whether they have the skill set to be successful in the specific role.
