The Miami Hurricanes are showing signs of resurgence, clinching a much-needed series victory against Clemson with a dominant 8-2 performance. This win marks their first conference series triumph of the season, demonstrating a renewed offensive spark and a strong pitching effort.
Hurricanes Surge Ahead Early
Miami wasted no time asserting their dominance, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The offensive momentum was ignited by a leadoff double from second baseman Jake Ogden, who continues his impressive streak of hitting. This was followed by an RBI single from Daniel Cuvet, setting the stage for further scoring. Brylan West then drove in Cuvet with two runners on base, extending Miami’s advantage to a comfortable two-run lead.
Collera’s Stellar Sunday Start
On the pitching front, sophomore Lazaro Collera delivered a career-defining outing. The Hurricanes have been actively seeking a consistent Sunday starter since the departure of Tate DeRais, and Collera appears to be that missing piece. He pitched six shutout innings against Clemson, a personal best in terms of innings pitched. This performance also saw him surpass the 100-pitch mark for the first time in his collegiate career, showcasing his endurance and effectiveness.
Offensive Firepower Ignites
A recurring theme for the Hurricanes this season has been their ability to load the bases, often turning these opportunities into crucial runs. Against Clemson, this offensive strategy paid dividends once again, propelling Miami to a 4-0 lead. Daniel Cuvet drew a walk with one out, initiating a rally that capitalized on the team’s hitting prowess.
The consistent support for Cuvet from his teammates, particularly Alex Sosa and Derek Williams, has been a key factor in Miami’s success. Sosa contributed with a solo home run in the fourth inning, while Williams delivered the decisive blow later in the game.
Williams’ Grand Slam Seals the Deal
The seventh inning saw the Hurricanes load the bases once more. Derek Williams stepped up to the plate and, on the very first pitch he saw, launched a 91 mph fastball over the left-field fence for a grand slam. This monumental hit extended Miami’s lead and showcased the potent lineup they possess.
With this grand slam, Williams now boasts 10 home runs on the season. He joins Daniel Cuvet, who has 11 home runs, as Miami becomes one of only two teams in the ACC (alongside Clemson) to have multiple players with 10 or more home runs.
Bullpen Secures the Victory
While Collera provided a stellar start, the bullpen saw some action. Freshman right-hander Gio Glidewell entered the game, but gave up two runs, ending the shutout bid. Despite this brief hiccup, the Hurricanes maintained their pressure on the mound. The pitching staff collectively recorded nine strikeouts against the Tigers. Closer Ryan Bilka came in to finish the game. Although he allowed two home runs and a few other hits, leading to Clemson cutting the deficit to two runs, Bilka managed to secure the final outs, preserving the Hurricanes’ victory.
Momentum Building for Miami
The Miami Hurricanes are clearly finding their stride, even as they navigate an increasing number of injuries. Their recent form is impressive, having won seven of their last eight games. The team now returns home for an extended nine-game homestand. Their next contest is a midweek matchup against Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m. at Mark Light Field. This promising stretch of play suggests that Miami is poised for a strong finish to their season.
