Woodside Secures Texas Hub in OCI Global Deal

Woodside Energy Secures Key Ammonia Facility in Texas

Woodside Energy has officially taken the reins of the Beaumont New Ammonia (BNA) facility located in Texas, a significant move following its recent acquisition of OCI Global. This strategic development positions Woodside to substantially bolster its presence in the global ammonia market.

The acquisition of OCI Clean Ammonia Holding, a subsidiary of OCI Global, was finalised in September 2024 for a hefty sum of USD2.35 billion (approximately AUD3.39 billion). The BNA facility, now under Woodside’s operational control, is slated to commence ammonia production in December 2025.

Boosting US Ammonia Exports and Regional Economy

The BNA facility boasts an impressive production and export capacity of up to 1.1 million tonnes of ammonia per annum. This substantial output is expected to effectively double the United States’ current ammonia export volume. Beyond its international impact, the facility is projected to be a significant driver of economic growth within the region, creating jobs and stimulating local industries.

Woodside has articulated that gaining operational control of the BNA facility is a pivotal step in advancing its strategic ambitions within the global ammonia sector. The company sees this as a critical enabler for its future growth and its ability to serve a growing international demand for ammonia.

A Commitment to Ammonia Supply and Lower-Carbon Future

Lizz Westcott, CEO of Woodside Energy, emphasised the company’s immediate priorities and long-term vision. “As the facility enters its operational phase, and amidst the current market disruptions, our primary focus remains on the safe and reliable delivery of ammonia supply to our valued customers,” Westcott stated.

She further elaborated on the company’s forward-looking objectives: “In the longer term, we remain steadfast in our goal of supporting the development of a competitive lower-carbon ammonia sector. The BNA facility is instrumental in achieving this aspiration, providing a strong foundation for future innovation and sustainable practices within the industry.”

The acquisition and subsequent operational control of the BNA facility underscore Woodside’s commitment to expanding its energy portfolio and its strategic investment in the burgeoning ammonia market. This move is anticipated to solidify Woodside’s position as a key player in both conventional and emerging lower-carbon energy solutions. The scale of the BNA facility, coupled with Woodside’s established expertise, suggests a significant impact on global ammonia trade flows and a potential catalyst for further development in the sector.
