Xander McGuire follows Dad’s footsteps to iconic radio gig

Xander McGuire Steps into the Media Spotlight, Following in His Famous Father’s Footsteps

The McGuire name is synonymous with Australian sports broadcasting, and now, the next generation is making its mark. Xander McGuire, son of media titan Eddie McGuire, is embarking on a significant new chapter in his burgeoning media career, taking the helm of a well-loved radio program.

At 25 years old, Xander has signed on to co-host the highly anticipated return of Triple M’s sports show, Dead Set Legends. This move places him squarely in a familiar broadcasting landscape, echoing his father’s own journey through the Australian media industry.

The iconic Saturday morning radio show, Dead Set Legends, boasts a rich history, having been a staple for nearly two decades before its hiatus in 2019. Over the years, it featured prominent voices such as Ray Warren and Richard Freedman. Now, the much-loved format is set to make a comeback on Triple M, introducing a fresh lineup of hosts. Alongside Xander, the new team will include former AFL star Isaac Smith and Brisbane Lions player Kate McCarthy.

Triple M has always been a significant platform for the McGuire family. Eddie himself was a dominant force on the airwaves for many years, most notably as the host of The Hot Breakfast until 2020. It’s a station where Xander is likely to feel right at home, particularly given his father’s history.

“Dad started on radio with the Grill Team in 1994 in the same Saturday morning slot,” Xander shared, reflecting on his new role. “His co-hosts Jane Kennedy and Trevor Marmalade became lifelong colleagues and friends. I’m looking forward to having as much fun as they did.”

This isn’t Xander’s first foray into sports commentary with his new co-host. He already hosts The Round So Far for the AFL website alongside Kate McCarthy. The pair are expected to bring their established chemistry and insightful analysis of all the latest footy action to their new Triple M platform. Fans won’t have to wait long to tune in, as Dead Set Legends is scheduled to make its grand return on Saturday, March 28th, kicking off at 10 am. The show will then air weekly throughout the AFL season, providing dedicated coverage and discussion for passionate fans.

The McGuire Family Dynasty: A Look Behind the Scenes

Xander is one of two sons of Eddie McGuire and his wife, Carla Galloway, whom Eddie married in 1997. Xander was born in 2001, followed by his younger brother, Joseph, in 2003. Eddie McGuire has been an omnipresent figure on Australian television and radio for the past three decades, carving out a distinguished career as an AFL commentator and a popular gameshow host.

It appears Xander has inherited his father’s passion for the spotlight, venturing into the entertainment industry at a remarkably young age. He secured his first acting role at just 12 years old, portraying Charlie Hoyland, the son of Step Scully, in the long-running soap opera Neighbours. In more recent years, his career trajectory has shifted towards sports punditry.

Xander’s Growing Media Career

Xander’s journey in sports media has been steadily building. In 2022, he joined Channel Nine’s news team in Melbourne as a sports presenter. His talent and growing reputation soon led to a move across to Channel Seven, where he now contributes to both their news and extensive AFL coverage. Beyond his work on Seven’s Friday night AFL broadcasts, Xander has also gained radio experience. He previously hosted Triple M’s breakfast show during the 2025-2026 summer period, a stint that saw him collaborate with Melbourne captain Max Gawn and commentator Kate McCarthy, his current Dead Set Legends co-host.

Eddie McGuire has consistently expressed his pride and support for his son’s media ambitions. However, he has been careful to emphasize that he is not an overbearing “stage dad.” Speaking about Xander’s achievements, Eddie has stated, “He did all this on his own and on merit.” This sentiment highlights Xander’s drive and independent success in forging his own path within the competitive Australian media landscape.
