Steven Yeun Opens Door to Marvel Cinematic Universe After ‘Thunderbolts*’ Departure
Acclaimed actor Steven Yeun, widely recognised for his compelling portrayal of Glenn Rhee in the global phenomenon The Walking Dead, has recently voiced a strong desire to join the ranks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This significant development emerges following his earlier, albeit unavoidable, exit from one of Marvel’s highly anticipated projects.
In 2023, Yeun was initially slated for a pivotal role in Thunderbolts, the upcoming ensemble film featuring Marvel’s formidable anti-hero team, under the direction of Jake Schreier. Reports at the time strongly indicated that Yeun was set to embody the immensely powerful superhero Sentry, also known as Robert ‘Bob’ Reynolds, and his formidable dark alter-ego, Void.
The ‘Thunderbolts*’ Setback and Yeun’s Perspective

Steven Yeun’s departure from Thunderbolts was officially attributed to scheduling conflicts that arose as a direct consequence of the 2023 Hollywood SAG-AFTRA strikes. During a candid interview with Variety in 2024, Yeun offered his perspective on the situation, expressing a sense of regret over the circumstances.
“I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it,” Yeun explained. “But Jake [Schreier], I know, is going to do an incredible job.” He further elaborated that he had conveyed his apologies via email, emphasizing that there were no hard feelings and highlighting the collaborative nature of the decision to part ways.
Despite this unexpected hurdle, Yeun was quick to reaffirm his keen interest in participating in the MCU. He stated unequivocally, “I wanna do a Marvel movie.”
Even now, a couple of years removed from the initial casting, Yeun has confirmed that he remains open to a future Marvel role. When questioned about whether he had seen any developments regarding Thunderbolts or if any substantial talks had resurfaced, he responded thoughtfully, “I did. I love Jake, Jake Schreier, an incredible human director. I did [see it] and I never say never. I’m around.”
Yeun’s Diverse Talent: A Perfect MCU Fit

Steven Yeun’s acting career is marked by an impressive range and a remarkable ability to inhabit diverse characters. From his raw and intense dramatic performance in the critically lauded series Beef to his visceral survivalist portrayal in The Walking Dead, and his recent acclaimed voice work in the animated superhero series Invincible, Yeun has consistently demonstrated his versatility.
His compelling physical presence, coupled with an undeniable on-screen charisma, positions him as an ideal candidate to bring depth and impact to any Marvel project following his Thunderbolts withdrawal. Whether he’s tackling a heroic role, a complex villain, or a morally ambiguous character, Yeun possesses the gravitas to elevate the narrative and resonate with audiences.
While Yeun’s current focus remains on projects like Invincible and other burgeoning ventures, his positive and open stance towards the MCU keeps the possibility of his future involvement alive. Should Marvel Studios decide to approach him again, perhaps for Phase 6 or beyond, fans would undoubtedly welcome the talented actor with open arms into the expansive and ever-growing MCU fold. His proven track record suggests he would be a valuable asset to any superhero ensemble or standalone film.
