Rising Star Embraces Opportunity in Billie Jean King Cup
Emerson Jones, the 17-year-old former “orange girl,” is preparing to step into the spotlight as she looks forward to making her debut in this week’s Billie Jean King Cup tie against Great Britain in Melbourne. The young Australian player has been given the chance to replace Maya Joint in the squad after the Australian No.1 was forced out due to a persistent back injury.
Under the captaincy of retired tennis legend Sam Stosur, the Australian team features a mix of experienced and emerging talent. Alongside Jones are Talia Gibson, Kimberly Birrell, Storm Hunter, and Ellen Perez. The team has been training in Melbourne ahead of the two-day qualifying tie at the John Cain Arena, which begins on Friday.
Jones, who was once a training partner with the squad, expressed her comfort in representing Australia. She said that being part of the team this year is an exciting opportunity for her, especially considering her previous role as the “orange girl.”

If she gets the chance to play, Jones will become one of the youngest debutants in the history of the competition, which was previously known as the Federation Cup and dates back to 1963. The world No.134 shared her excitement about competing for Australia, calling it a privilege.
Storm Hunter, a former world No.1 doubles star, is also looking forward to playing in front of local fans. This marks the first time Melbourne has hosted a BJK Cup tie in 15 years. Hunter acknowledged the loss of Maya Joint, who is ranked 30th, but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a win against Great Britain.

The British team is missing their top four players, including Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, and Francesca Jones, who have chosen to focus on the European clay-court swing. Additionally, British No. 2 Sonay Kartal suffered a back injury at the Indian Wells Open last month, further weakening the squad.
“It’s unfortunate for Maya to be withdrawn last week, but it’s an amazing opportunity for Emerson,” Hunter said. “It’s really nice for ‘Emo’ to make her debut. She’s obviously been the orange girl here before with the team, so she knows how things roll, but for her to make her debut is really special.”
“For me, it’s really cool to be a part of that. She’s super young, and for her to be the next generation, along with Talia, is really exciting.”
The teams will compete in a best-of-five-rubber format, consisting of four singles matches and one doubles match. The winner of the tie will advance to the eight-nation Finals, scheduled for September in China.
