Younis shines as City defeats Phoenix in fiery clash

Melbourne City Secures Crucial Victory Over Wellington Phoenix

Melbourne City’s rising star, Marcus Younis, delivered another unforgettable moment in his growing highlights reel, leading his team to a vital 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park. The victory was crucial for City as they continue their push for a top-six finish in the A-League Men.

Aziz Behich opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a well-taken goal, and Younis sealed the win in the 76th minute with a powerful strike. This result marked City’s third consecutive A-League Men win, showcasing their resilience and determination in a physically demanding match.

Younis almost scored one of the goals of the season in the 84th minute when he attempted a bicycle kick, only for it to be blocked on the line. Despite this near miss, the two goals were enough to secure the win and ensure City finishes the round in sixth place with 35 points. They are just one point behind fifth-placed Melbourne Victory (36 points) and two points behind both Adelaide and Sydney, with two rounds remaining.

Wellington Phoenix, on the other hand, remain five points off sixth place with only two games left in the season. City coach Aurelio Vidmar acknowledged the tight race for finals positions, stating:

“It’s going to be tight,” Vidmar said when asked about the battle for finals positions. “It’s been a crazy season all year, and it continues to be that, so who knows where it’s going to finish.”

Intense First Half with Frustrations and Key Moments

The first half was filled with frustration for Melbourne City players. Nathaniel Atkinson had to be calmed down by Samuel Souprayen in the 17th minute after he unleashed a tirade on teammate German Ferreyra following a defensive mistake. Similarly, Elbasan Rashani expressed his frustration after Andrew Nabbout got in the way of his shot.

However, the mood shifted in the 27th minute when Atkinson’s fine lead-up play set up Behich, whose goal took a wicked deflection off Wellington defender Isaac Hughes. This moment brought smiles to the faces of the City players.

The physicality of the match was evident from the start, with Phoenix striker Ifeanyi Eze leaving the field with a bloodied mouth after a swinging arm from Ferreyra. The intensity continued to rise throughout the game.

Physicality Increases in the Second Half

The second half saw the physicality of the match escalate further. Eze shoved over Andreas Kuen just seconds after play resumed. In the 55th minute, the pair had to be separated after coming face-to-face following a tangle in the box involving multiple players.

By this point, more players were suffering knocks than there were shots on goal. However, Younis came close to making it 2-0 in the 67th minute when he chested down a pass before whipping an attempt across the face of goal.

Younis finally secured the win in the 76th minute when he latched onto a beautiful slicing pass from Kuen and nailed a strike past the advancing goalkeeper. This goal proved to be the decisive moment in the match.

Leckie Makes Comeback After Injury

Attacker Mathew Leckie made his return to the pitch in the 83rd minute, marking his first A-League Men appearance since October 31. He has been recovering from hip surgery and was welcomed back with enthusiasm.

“It was really good he was able to get on the pitch,” Vidmar said. “Hopefully he pulls up alright. He’s been training the last two or three weeks with the group. He’s feeling great some days, not the best other days, but this should give him a lot of confidence.”
