Younis shines, gets sent off as City inflicts pain on WSW

Marcus Younis’ Red Card Sparks Controversy in Melbourne City’s Win

Melbourne City faced a tough loss as young winger Marcus Younis received a second yellow card in their 3-0 victory over Western Sydney, ruling him out of an important match against Central Coast. The 20-year-old, on loan from Danish club Brondby, had an impressive performance, scoring a goal and providing two assists before the incident.

Younis was booked in the 13th minute for fouling Lawrence Thomas. Later, in the 67th minute, he received a second yellow card after a challenge on Alex Gersbach. Fourth official Jonathan Barreiro alerted referee Lachlan Keevers to the foul, leading to the decision that ultimately cost Younis his place in the team.

Coach Aurelio Vidmar expressed his frustration with the decision, stating that it was a wrong call. “The ball was trying to go over his head, and he didn’t even know where his opponent was. He was just trying to grab the ball,” Vidmar said. He also questioned the involvement of the fourth official, noting that the alleged kick to the calf was not accurate.

Despite the controversy, Melbourne City managed to secure a win, moving them up to seventh place in the league. The victory came at a cost, as midfielder Ryan Teague was substituted at halftime due to a left knee injury.

Western Sydney, currently at the bottom of the table, remained winless in four matches ahead of their upcoming derby against Sydney FC. The team was missing several key players, including Brandon Borrello, Ryan Fraser, Kosta Barbarouses, Hiroshi Ibusuki, and Jacob Farrell. Interim manager Gary van Egmond explained that their absences were due to injuries rather than any changes in management.

Van Egmond stated, “Brandon has a slight tweak in his groin. Ryan has a tight achilles. Kosta has a calf issue. Hiroshi is coming back from a calf injury. Jacob Farrell has a groin problem, and we’ll probably be lucky to see him back this year.”

Melbourne City also faced challenges in goal, as first-choice goalkeeper Patrick Beach was unavailable due to a quad injury sustained during Socceroos duty. James Nieuwenhuizen made his debut in his place.

Western Sydney had several chances in the opening six minutes, but they failed to capitalize. Melbourne City’s Daniel Arzani also missed opportunities before the breakthrough came in the 23rd minute. Younis assisted Andreas Kuen, who scored with a well-taken goal. Younis then added another goal in the 33rd minute, scoring from long range with a deflected shot.

Four minutes into the second half, Elbasan Rashani completed the victory by scoring from a cross by Younis, securing three points for Melbourne City.
