The Need for Clarity in India’s ODI Strategy
Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has called on the Indian team management to provide clear guidance to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli regarding their roles as the team prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup. He believes that players of their calibre deserve clarity, especially at this stage of their careers. Yuvraj stressed the importance of a well-structured plan for the upcoming global tournament.
With both Rohit and Kohli stepping away from Tests and T20Is, their roles remain central to India’s strategy. However, their positions also represent a broader conversation about transition. Speaking on Sports Tak, Yuvraj pointed out that open and honest discussions between head coach Gautam Gambhir, the selectors, and the two veteran players are essential.
“I can’t say what’s going on in their minds. They seem dedicated to playing in the World Cup, but ultimately, the decision rests with them and the selectors, who will have to determine what happens next. They are exceptional players, and needs clarity,” Yuvraj said.
“There should be an open discussion where you can sit down and talk honestly. It’s challenging, particularly at that stage of your career. You might not like hearing that the team is planning for the future, but a year later, you’ll appreciate that at least someone was honest with you. Unfortunately, that kind of transparency isn’t common in Indian cricket,” he added.

Both players have shown their value in the ODI setup. Kohli, in particular, has been in superb form since late 2025, regaining the top spot in the ICC rankings with a more aggressive approach. His performance in a series against South Africa was impressive, where he scored 302 runs in three matches at an average of 151 and a strike rate of over 117.
Rohit also had a brilliant run in Australia, where he scored 202 runs in three matches at an average of 101, including a match-winning century in Sydney that allowed him to reclaim the No.1 spot in the ODI rankings at 38. However, his form took a dip in the home series against New Zealand, where he managed just 61 runs at an average of 20.33.
Focus on Strategy and Communication
Yuvraj acknowledged that the debate surrounding Rohit and Kohli will continue, but he believes India’s primary focus should be on creating a clear, and organised strategy for the 2027 World Cup. He emphasised that the key issue is not necessarily who plays, but how effectively the management communicates its vision to both the senior players and the emerging talents.
“I don’t want any player who has represented the country for so long to be in a position where no one clearly communicates the plan to them. Either fully commit to them for the World Cup and support them, or let them know that the team is focusing on younger players. Someone needs to be honest and reveal the reality. I believe this should happen after this IPL,” he said.
