A Powerful Tradition of Support and Compassion
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On Saturday, the biker community came together for the 26th annual Great Teddy Bear Run, an event that has become a powerful symbol of support for child abuse victims. This annual gathering not only highlights the commitment of local riders but also serves as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness about child abuse and providing comfort to those affected.
The event is designed to collect teddy bears that are then donated to children who are served by the Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center. These bears play a significant role in helping children feel safe and supported during their time at the center, especially when they are receiving services related to child sexual abuse.
The Impact of the Biker Community
Sabrina Durbin, the community outreach coordinator for the Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center, shared her thoughts on the event and the biker community’s involvement. She emphasized that while many people might perceive bikers as intimidating, they often have a deep sense of compassion and care for others.
“Even though the bikers might look mean and scary with all their leather, they have these softest hearts,” Durbin said. “Some of them even have teddy bears that are as big as the biker themselves. So we just have such a great support system when it comes to this event.”
This year marks Durbin’s fifth participation in the Great Teddy Bear Run, and she continues to be amazed by the level of support from the biker community. She expects more than 600 teddy bear donations this year, which will give children the opportunity to choose their own bear.
A Longstanding Commitment
Kathy Ellis, a Bowling Green resident, has been part of this ride for 23 years. She described the experience as both rewarding and meaningful. For her, the combination of the ride itself and the act of giving back keeps her coming back year after year.
“That’s the biker community when you use that terminology,” Ellis said. “We’re all one. We come together for a great cause and it benefits a lot of children. The Bowling Green City Police Department did an excellent job. Kentucky State Police helped us out as well. The flow of the ride was excellent. Didn’t have to stop or anything like that. And it was just a good day for a ride.”
The Role of the Teddy Bears
The teddy bears collected during the run are distributed to 10 counties that are served by the Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center. These bears are placed in a special teddy bear room where children can select one of their own when they come to receive services.
Durbin explained how impactful this gesture is for the children involved. “It’s just very impactful and really makes you realize just like the impact that the community has on the center.”
A Celebration of Unity and Compassion
The Great Teddy Bear Run is more than just a motorcycle ride; it is a celebration of unity, compassion, and the power of community support. Through this event, the biker community continues to show that their presence can make a real difference in the lives of children who have experienced abuse.
Each year, the event grows in significance, drawing more participants and donations. It serves as a reminder that even the most unexpected groups can come together for a common cause and create lasting change.
